Wonder if you will get a visit from the ghost Dick Anderson? Wonder what he'd think of people like us? Mark I had dinner with Dick at a Historical Diving Society annual meeting, and hung out with him earlier that day while tending to other HDS matters. You couldn't meet a nicer and more entertaining guy than Dick. He'd like what y'all are doing here.

Yeah, I kinda think he would too--SIGH My friend Jim Steele who runs Steele's Discount Scuba in Oakland met him waaaaaaaaaaay back, in the early 1960's, and the general consensus is that he was a stand-up-guy. A project I'm working on is to make a super hotrod from a chrome tilt-valve second stage: since they don't have that goofy thing for the double exhaust mushrooms, I'm going to open the port up to use a larger mushroom that will seat on the tee and not the body. I'm then going to put a venturi tube in a downstream valve body pointed down the bore. I hear a lot of people complain about how long the tee is and that it's restrictive, it's no more restrictive than a USD Calypso-III; it's the mushroom that's the problem... JB

Okay, while I was taking photos of my Healthways SCUBA double hose regulator with the split hose, I decided you would enjoy seeing by garage exhibit of vintage diving equipment, along with my history of Healthways single hose regulators. You can see that I have both double hose and single hose regulators on display in my garage (my only display site), along with a selection of different vintage dive masks and fins. These include some of my first experiments with my Scoop Fin design. Here are my Healthways single hose regulators, starting with the Scubair from 1959, the Scuba Star (two versions--tilt valve and downstream valve), then various variations of Scubair regulators (Scubair 300, Scubair-J, etc.). These also show the different designs of the second stage. Right at the beginning are the parts that Jaybird gave me of Dick Anderson's first designs for the Scubair/Scuba Star first stage with its tilt valve design. And, here are the first stages, starting with the most advanced Scubair 300, Scubair (restrictor orifice), Scubair sonic, Scubair-J, and going to the Scuba Star and original Scubair. Oh, and the mask is the U.S. Divers Company Champion Deluxe oval mask, one of the original oval masks, still in condition to dive. Here is a top view of the second stages of these Healthways single hose regulators. Enjoy, John

very nice display John! 8-)thank you for sharing that pic with us. If you will look at the second shelf up on the left, you will see my DA Aqualung with its green Broxton label. (The label looks yellow, but that is the bare brass, and there is some green paint still left on it.) John

OK...We get it!!! You got better stuff than us!!! Ha ha! (That was meant as a joke.) No, really nice set up! I just quickly looked at it, after I post this I will take another detailed look. I think your garage is nicer than my little basement workshop/storage room. Speaking of garages with Scuba gear. My Wife and I used to go swimming/snorkeling at a local quarry called Portage Quarry. Well anyway, this place had a "museum" in a single car garage with the air fill site/dive shop/office. This little place had more "neat stuff" packed in that small room than I could take in in one visit. It was a really concentrated and cozy little place to see vintage Scuba gear. The only thing I regret is that this was before I actually made the jump and got certified, so I did not have the prior knowledge and interest in the gear at that time like I do now. Seeing your photos made me think of Portage Quarry near Bowling Green, Ohio. The location has since closed...the Summer I got certified and then had my health issue. I never got a chance to actually dive there... Mark Here is a link to what I was talking about... www.portagequarry.com/museum.htm

I got to take my Scubair out for a 30 minute dive this evening. Really love this reg., just like my Voit 40-Fathom. Mark

Mark, I'm guessing it's the second gen. of the 1665 you're talking about: Grumble, grumble, grumble now who's jealous? One of these days man I have to get a whole bleep-load of mouth-pieces, I really can't stand the way those clear/white ones look on my classic chrome beauties... JB

Exactly the Scubair I have, I've shared a photo on here as well. At least you have the stainless steel mouthpiece clamp band. I'd love to find a few more of those. And no, the clear mouthpieces just don't look good on older regs. My Voit 40-Fathom has a grey mouthpiece. I have located a replacement that is fairly close looking... Mark

Mak, did you by chance have this Scubair set to "J-valve," or was it on "Auto-reserve"?

I took the Scuair back down to the depths again this evening. Had a great dive with it, no issues at all. At this point in time you'd think I'd stop sharing every time I took what reg. for a dive, but I like to share I had a great dive...
Also got to see a Muskrat swim overhead (don't see that everyday, or a least where I dive) and see a large Catfish guard it's eggs. Mark

It's pretty cool you can go out so easily (or am I assuming?). Here in the SF Bay Area, you have to go pretty far to get wet in something other than a pool! I've been looking for a freshwater place to dive, but the snow melt this year is making that difficult. I have a house up in the foothills near a lake which I'm planning to try soon. It's at 6000 feet, so I'll have to be careful about it. I doubt I'll go more than 30-40 feet deep, though. I'll use my capillary depth gauge!
