I got this really cute Sportsways Orca: The previous owner tried to rehab it, but really (expletive deleted) it up, not seriously, mostly just brute force and ignorance combined So, I got the second stage rill-purdy: the cover was scratched and scuffed up... I remembered reading that they were stainless: yep! So, with some 320, 600-grit paper, then a dremmel tool with a polishing head and good rubbing compound, it don' look too bad now! JB

Do you need a first stage to go with it?

John, I have one, but which kind are you offering: spare parts are always great to have? Let me know how much you want? Also, could you send it with an MR-12 diaphragm please? Thanks JB

Well, it’s finally done: the hard part was getting a new HP-seat for it! These originally had their seats crimped in: Phil’s was original, and he brought his to Steele’s so I could compare the two. These seats weren’t meant to be replaced; you just had to buy a whole new piston… On mine, someone had taken the seat out and straightened the sides so that a new seat could be put in. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a seat that fit it. How I finally remedied this problem was to drill straight through the seat and cleaned up the burs. I put in a Dacor seat that I got at Steele’s: with a razor-blade I cut the excess off of the end sticking out. With a blunt probe, I pushed the seat out, and flipped it over, and, and, and… I connected it to a tank and watched the piston activate through the equalization-ports: silent as a grave! I took a hit off of the second stage and it breathes very-very-nicely— SIIIIIIIGH! Jaybird

Jim, that's the $64-Dollar Question. Without going into too much detail: when I can build up enough of the muscles in my back. I d'know: I can't rush this, it's super frustrating though JB

We have to stop bidding against each other. It's costing us money.

Was that you? You gave up quick.... I usually only want an SPG or something, not the reg. We should communicate and co-bid on some of this stuff. It'd be cheaper, and I wouldn't have to have so much extra crap!

Interesting. Wasn't really paying attention to the pics. My Orca has the balanced HTII type of first stage on it. Not correct?

So, there's a BIN/Offer sale on the Bait right now: it's a NE Divers single hoser and a Calypso IV (asking too much @ $99). There is a nice Sea-Vue SPG, too. The NED 2nd stage looks an awful lot like a Sportsways, which makes sense because of the Hydro Twin connection between NED and Sportsways. The 1st looks like a Sportsways part, like the one on my SportDiver II and the above Orca. But, it appears to have a PRV on it, making the 2nd a tilt valve? JB, maybe all you need is a NED sticker for the purge button on your Orca!

That one's a tilt-valve, really old one! I remember reading just a wee-bit ago that the Orca was purchased by NED from Sportsways: they're very nice regulators Now I have an octo for mine, thanks buuuddy JB

I always liked the New England Divers Inc. logo, someone needs to make a T-Shirt with that on it! Mark
