I was just thinkin'( BOOOOOOOOOOM!) yeah, that's what that sound was Yeah, anyway: do they still make regs with tilt-valves nowadays, or are they just too limited in their delivery of air? I remember Charlie mentioning that they are really great for hookah-rigs. I know that Sportsways/Waterlung had a tilt-valve DH, were there any others, and how did those perform? JB

I think I recall hearing that tilt-valves where still used in some hookah rigs as well. Would be nice to find out and see if the parts would work for some tilt-valves we might have. I don't have a fear of tilt-valves now, just would be nice to know that LP Seats/"demand needles?" would be available if needed. Mark

Actually, I have one of the best tilt valve regulators ever designed, the Scubapro pilot regulator. There are several pilot valve regulators now on the market, and they all feature a tilt valve to initiate the valve opening. You really cannot see it, but this is the initial area that contacts the tilt valve portion of the Scubapro Pilot's pilot valve. Here you can see all the parts of the Scubapro Pilot's pilot valve. Here is a closer look at the mechanism of the Scubapro Pilot's pilot valve. John

Huh! Whaddya know? That's very interesting. I'd'a thought the tilt valve would've been looooong gone!

Yeah, but John, that's a "pilot valve": that's cheating--SNORT! Tekna made a tilt/pilot-valve too and I'm pretty sure it resurfaced as an Oceanic reg later. Oceanic's North American head quarters is in my town, who'da thunk? JB

Anyone know anything about this one? And don't forget about the Snark III, as well as Nemrod's tilt valve single hosers!

The Snark III is not a tilt valve; the Sportsways Duel Air was the only tilt valve double hose regulator that I know of. The USD Mistral had an upstream push valve, which is also what the Snark III has in its second stage.

Yep, tilt valves are still the regs of choice for hookah. Unlike a downstream valve, they work well with varying supply pressure. TUSA still sells one. Since the compressor on the surface provides a fixed pressure, the psig at the reg will drop with increasing depth. Downstream valves set for a certain intermediate pressure will get harder to breath as a diver goes deeper. And yes, if the supply pressure to tilt valve gets too high it will lock up. That's what pop-off valves are for. If you're looking for parts for a tilt valve, you might try Keene Engineering. Parts aren't listed online, but a phone call may reveal more. keeneeng.comJay, you are correct that Tekna had a servo-assist 2nd stage activated by a tilt valve. That's why the hose connection for the B-2100 had a spring loaded over-pressure valve. Before they went out of business, Tekna modified the B-2100 to use a complicated system incorporating a downstream activation valve. Oceanic's Omega 2nd stage has always used a downstream activation valve. Good Dives, Charlie

It's considered a reciprocating valve since it's pushed and pulled off/onto the seat.
