is there a trick to reassembling the Trieste? I can’t get the diaphragm to stay centered. I took it apart to take pictures of the inside and now it sucks water when I inhale. Works fine out of the water. Help!

CJ, it sounds to me like it's not seating: try some soapy water on the outer flange and work the top can back and forth. The water will help to make sure nothing is binding, and the back and forth movement will assure that the diaphragm is riding in the proper groves... The water will also wash away as soon as you get it wet! Jaybird

The Trieste diaphragm can easily come out of its groove. The only way to get it back in is to take off the ring, re-seat the diaphragm, and put the ring back on again. I would not worry about determining where the leak is coming from, as you can probably see that when you take it apart, which you must do to re-seat it. There may even be a crease caused by the improper seating. Do this, and it will re-seat and you won't get any air coming through when you breath in to check.
John
PS, I had the same problem with a Dacor Pacer regulator a few years back, as it had the same type of diaphragm closure.

Replacing the ring requires three hands, although it becomes easier each time I do it. As a person with the close motor skills of a chicken, I find it challenging.

CJ, if TD does want it, just send it to him with the caviat that he needs to put it back together: he's a capable lad!

CJ, I use a clamp on the cans when I put some DH regs together. You don't have to go real tight, just enough to keep the bottom can from slipping while you finagle the case ring on. That make the operation more of a three hands rather than five hands deal.

If there's a solution I will find it, just give me some time and a thermos of tea. CJ we'll find a way to fix the email issue. I'm sure it's just a minor bug in the system. I'll check tonight when I get home. TD

Thanks to all of you for your advice and support. I persevered and put it back together and working properly. No water on the intake side. Now, if I could just figure out how to send pictures on the Interweb.

Dear Dr. Frankenreg, During these troubled times while we are quarantined at home, would you please invent a two-piece clamp ring for double hose regulators? It would help those of us with the close motor skills of a chicken.

That reg looks like a Healthways Scuba that Phil has the clamp on. Coincidentally at the time he posted that pic I was in the middle of restoring a HW Scuba I had gotten off of ebay, and it sure didn't take long to figure out how handy a clamp would be when reassembling this reg. I was able to reassemble without any problem; but using a clamp like that would sure make it much easier. (Probably much easier than some of us have had posting pics here recently.

It is a Scuba. The Scuba and the Deluxe are really frustrating to put the ring on. The case halves don't lock together like the GL and the things will slip out of alignment. The clamp works very well to keep the edges matched as you finagle the clamp ring on.
CJ, I'd love to figure out a replacement ring for the Scuba regulators, but I don't have a way to make them. Extruding the sheet metal into the proper channel shape and bending it to the right diameter will take more tooling than I have access to. The reproduction rings for USD regs might be modded into a two piece set. The USD regs are 4.5" in diameter, and the HWs are 5". I'll have to think about it.
Some one piece rings for both single and double hose regs are so tight, it's really hard to get them on and off. Sometimes, getting the clamp screw started can be really frustrating. The two piece clamps are so much easier, and are a much better way to go.
