Having just returned last thursday from my 10 days in Brasil, which I had the opportunity to make one day of diving I would like to show the few photos I was able to take.
The trip over all was good, no thanks to American Airlines, who were continueslly late and cost me a day on the ground with travel.
The weather was bad the first week, so no boats out, no diving.
I tried snorkeling from the beach and after a couple of near misses among the rocks I declined to stay in the water.
The 1st weekend of March was good weather and the boats were out on Monday. I dove the Germainia and Britiana, two old steamships wrecked nearly 100 years ago. Close to shore with much surge and wave action, so there was few items to see. A typical old wreck.
The next day I was to dive the Galilera, a complete wreck, sitting at 8 to 30 meters. But a bad stomach virus shared between my lady and me stopped that trip. She is still sick today.
Over all the trip was good. Was glad to get away from the rat race here, Brasilians know how to have fun and relax and I enjoyed that.
The city is over 400 years old. 365 churches.......old buildings under restoration etc.
Interesting point, in 1624 or 1628 (dates are based on who you talk to) the Dutch decided they wanted this place. It has a huge bay call the Bay of All Saints (discovered on All Saints day)
One night the Dutch sailed into this bay to invade Salvador Bahia (there was no Brasil then) and the Portuguese met them in a all night firefight in the bay.
Next morning there were 90 ships on the bottom of the bay. Must of been one hell of a fight.
There are over 150 wrecks in this bay and outside the harbor.
I think a return trip in a couple of years will be in order.
Pitfalls to travel here: Taxis are high, get a room near the beach or on the beach. Stay away from food cooked in Dende Oil......take lots of water, hide your camera when not using and note the Pharmacys do not require prescriptions for antibiotics..but you need to speak the language or have a interperter..........English is not a second language here.
Here are the photos:........note I think I am the first doublehose diver here in decades..........my RAM was pawned over, talked about quite a bit.
