I really wish I could find a nearby fresh water lake (or place) to dive. The ocean is great, and we have amazing options locally to dive in the Pacific. But, it's getting to be too much for me. I really only want to test my regs these days.
I've seen cool underwater places all over the world, and I know that I haven't experienced it all, but I'm done with beach entry diving in the ocean. I relive the kelp forests and coral reefs in my dreams, but I'm too tired to battle the whole 9 yards (travel, cleaning, and rinsing, etc.,) in order to get there.
Other than a fresh water lake, or some other calm fresh water option, a boat dive in tropical water is the only thing I'd do, scuba-wise, these days. And maybe not even that?
Snorkeling has become my favorite dive option. What can you see at 100 fow that isn't at 20?

Clean fresh water, a dock to put tanks on, not having to rinse gear, steps to get down to the water. It's a very nice easy dive

I got the new Snark. It looks unused or almost. It has some dings from shipping with the Northill loose in the box. But it's sweet!
The early 2 disk diaphragm is stiff, but the exhaust mushroom is perfect. I put a diaphragm from another Snark in it, and it works great!
Anyone interested in a (nearly) pristine Snark III?

That's a nice looking Snark Phil. On my to do list is a late model Snark with a HP port. I think that will be after the Sportsways I'm doing now,and maybe an Aquarius.

I took the late model Snark 3 apart. This one has a HP port, and I believe it originally had the teal and red sticker on it. The sticker is long gone. While disassembling this one I found it's like none of the other Snarks I've worked on. This one doesn't have a HP nozzle like a DAAM, but rather it appears to be part of the body. I've got everything cleaned up, so time to start reassembling it. This will get a silicone mushroom and lp diaphragm and a new HP diaphragm.

When you get it partially together, but before putting the top box on, put it on a tank and pressurize it. Then hold your hand over the top of the levers, and see whether a strong Venturi stream hits the back of your hand, rather than heading down the intake horn. If so, your Snark III will profit by putting up a deflector over the levers. I did that, and somewhere have photos of the deflector I made out of a plastic milk carton. Now mine breaths like a Mistral at 400 psig.
John
I’ll look for those photos.

IMG_20231014_110604_433 by Patrick Michel, sur Flickr It must be like the one on the left, it works very good , the ventury is very strong , not necessary to modified like John, the photos from John show the model on the right', the nozzle for the second stage are completely different. About the HP nozzle , the nozzle shoot direct to the hole of the second stage. I dive with the left model last summer, and my felling , it's like a daam, I really like this regulator. BTW, aqualung with the legend 2nd and 3rd gen use the same kind of HP nozzle , they invented nothing this time. Hello John
What mouthpiece do you use ? I guess it's the Nemrod with the tiny littel NRV's . If you change to a mouthpiece with great NRV's you have the benefit of the better exhaust but probably the problem that now you can produce a full freeflow . At least I had this problem with the old and the new Snark (snarkIII with HP port) . But I have no experience with the very old SnarkIII's , they may be diverent .
Greetings Rainer

Hello Fred
You changed the mouthpiece to a better one . Do you had any problem's with freeflow when inhaling very quick ? And if yes , what did you do against ? I drilled the hole that is directed to the inhale horn to a littel bigger diameter . It's more then 30 year's ago , but as I remenber approximat from 3,6mm to 4,2mm . This stopped the freeflow very well .
BTW : German diver's called the SnarkIII " The Pearl "
Greetings Rainer

I did change the mouthpiece, first to a U.S. Divers straight mouthpiece, and then to the one in this photo: IMG_1424 by John Ratliff, on Flickr I believe this is a Heinke mouthpiece, and I got it from Vintage Frank while visiting him in Germany. He gave me the mouthpiece, and said that it would be a good fit with the Snark III using the original Snark III hoses. However, one of those hoses decided to come apart, and so now it has newer hoses. Concerning any freeflow, I have not experienced that with this combination. John

Concerned the freeflow , yes I experimented that when I inhale quick, A freeflow started , but not strong . but it stopped immediately if I stopped inhale or I breath again normally. Thank for the solution. I think that with 4,2mm, this diameter it reduce the speed of the air, and so ventury is better controlled. Cheer's Fred

Instead of drilling into the Snark jet, try a baffled mouthpiece. The DSV works well to tame the venturi, but an H-P (or James' copy) with James' 3d baffle is also excellent. I'd be very cautious about modding the original jet. You can't go back to original, and you'd have to jump through hoops to reclaim performance.
Fred, if you need a DSV or an H-P with baffle, contact me. I have extras.
It seems to me that here might be a need for a USD curved and straight mp baffle? (Sorry, James!)
