It is a one way valve at the exhaust hose, located close to the center of the demand valve diaphragm. It doesn't allow water back into the exhaust hose.

ah yes that makes sence. exhaust air opens it and water pressure keeps it closed.
Thanks Luis

"Duckbills" dive often, work on their own gear, and are active forum members in good standing (I hope). They sometimes tend to speak their minds more than they should, and are designed to vent out behind instead of in your face. They work just fine until they get OLD. Welcome once again! -duckbill

There is more to this question that meets the eye. "...but what in the world does the duckbill do?" is at the heart of the Cousteau Aqua Lung patent. As explained by Jacques himself in The Silent World[/I], here is why we have a duckbill: In his and Emile Gagnan's patent #2,485,039 they state: The use of the duckbill right at the low pressure diaphragm formed the basis of this patent, and was what the companies who manufactured the Aqua Lung (La Sipro Technique in France, U.S. Divers Company in the USA) used to keep competition at bay. Healthways and other companies tried valiantly to get around this patent with different types of exhausts, and the only other one which worked was a mushroom valve. In short, the duckbill valve at the LP diaphragm of the regulator is the heart of our Vintage Diving. John
