This is one of the first examples of a non-return mouthpiece. I have only seen it in this drawing from dive, the complete book of skin diving[/B] by rick and barbara carrier (they used all small letters with no caps on the book's jacket). Here's the page with a drawing of this mouthpiece: All these years, I thought that the drawing was wrong. But I was wrong, and this shows that the asymetrical design actually did exist. John

Dont get all hot and sweaty, its just a late 1954 BROXTON AQUA LUNG with a contemporary HOPE PAGE mouthpiece. Most people threw away the original one piece hose assembly and put on a hope page, or one of the newer us divers non return valve straight mouthpieces. I sold the one piece hose assembly from my BROXTON, and put on a straight mouthpiece with the valves, and its a mile better than that one piece junk they came with.

Chuck,
I think this was before the Hope-Page mouthpiece. I have a Hope-Page, and this is its is not it. I agree that it is a DA Aqualung though.

hi John: That is positively absoloutly irrevocatively a hope page. They may have had several models but that is A hope page I would date it as 1955/6. I heard that a modern rubber mouthpiece valve will work in them, is that true? Chuck

Chuck,
I have tried a USD non-return in my Hope-Page mouthpiece, and it works, but is quite stiff. One was a bit too large, and I hand-cut it down. While it worked, it was not the best. I still have original Hope-Page non-returns in mine, and sent one extra to one of our members last fall.
It is interesting to me that this one is a Hope-Page too. I think it must have been a very early model, as the construction is quite different than the ones used on the Healthways SCUBA regulator (the original one). In dive, the complete book of skin diving[/B] by rick and barbara carrier, on page 277 of the first edition, they list the Hope-Page mouthpiece system in he USD catelog as:
Stock Number: X-6 Description: Hope-Page non-return valve mouthpiece to prevent water from entering the regulator in hoses. $14.95

Thats an early Hope page, look close it has the tiny pull off rubber mouthpiece pressed on there, just like the "T" type chromed mouthpieces available when the broxtons were made, except these were chrome and went on the DX. It too had that little rubber mouthpiece. I dont know why anyone would buy that stuff after the easyclear mouthpieces came on the scene. I would never go back to that one piece hose assy. Thats caveman.

Chuck, Thankyou for identifying this rare mouthpiece for the rest of us. I never knew there was another Hope-Page mouthpiece other than the gray plastic one which Healthways used which had "Hope-Page" stamped on it. Is this earlier version also so stamped?
One of the things I love about these forums is that those of us new to the vintage diving scene can learn from those who are "in the know", especially from those who were diving this stuff when it was new. It's a real privilege.

For those of us who cannot see this mouthpiece in the future when the e-bay sale is over, here it is (from the e-bay webpage): John

Thanks for the great picture. that is an early one allright. Its even got the yellow clips with it. Some diver back in 1956 just "had" to have the most modern set up and likely got years of use, and fun out of it. I never knew they were made of plastic. Did healthways really put them on their regs from the factory? I thought all these mouthpieces were accessories? The healthways had that mouthpiece with the little valves in it. Maybe this one breathed better? I was 10 years old back then. I read every scuba catalog I ordered in the mail back then. thats how I remember this stuff.

The gray Healthways Hope-Page to which I was refering to as "plastic" is more of a bakelite material as far as I can tell. This earlier one as shown on eBay is described as being machined out of aluminum by "scubadubado" on the VDH thread about this same auction. The one in the auction picture does look like it is metal in construction, though I would have assumed it to be formed brass. Still learning.
