A while back, I asked what divers did about their J-valve pull rods when they were using the old, basket harnesses. I don't recall if I got any definitive answer. I know some just dispensed with the rod altogether, but I have found it nearly impossible to reach the lever while wearing the tank low where it should be. I just finished watching a Sea Hunt episode ("Killer Whale"), and I'm 95% certain that what I was seeing was that the rod was threaded under the top ring of the harness, but over the lower ring. I figured that would be a logical approach, but until now I wasn't really sure that was the practice "in the day". Like this: By the way, simonbeans' harnesses are a work of art, and he has proven to be very attentive to detail. Craftsmanship is hard to come by nowadays, but it is obvious he takes pride in his work- and rightly so. Contact him if you need a nice canvas-webbed reproduction harness. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just finished the next episode, "Midget Submarine", and it is on there too, at the end when the doctor climbs aboard the ship with Mike. But, what the .....what else am I seeing there?!!!!! Let's see....the harness is right....the tank looks right.....the J-valve is right.... but someone mounted the regulator backwards on the valve!!! It looks like Lloyd is kind of cracking up during the scene, too. If you have Sea Hunt, check it out. It's too funny!

William, "Killer Whale" is episode 11, and "Midget Submarine" is number 12, both from season one. I'm sure a prop guy must have done it. Maybe it was an inside joke. Take a look and tell me what you think!

Hi Jerry I really appreciate you, Plus Duckbill Too,so kindly, sending me the Sea Hunt Show's Information. >>>-->We sure will try and Watch them a little later tonight and I will look for the Proffessor too, ha, ha. Backwards Regulator, ha, ha. That is good!!! I have been a little busy the last few days with all kinds of things around the house going Out. When one thing goes , many Others breakdown at the same time it always seems, ha, ha. I have Plumbing needed, Lawn Sprinkler System, the Thermostat for the Air Conditioning/Heat control, Toilet valve is messed up and not working and a some Other Things needing repair also. The lawn sprinkler's big 6 Pipe Control Box Valves are not working hardly at all now and Sticking on the wrong pipes, constantly Open whic does not work properly at all. I can not repair that big old-thing myself, so I am having the Proffessional Sprinkler Repairman here on Tuesday. The main 6 Pipe Valve Control Box, down in the ground must be completely rebuilt now, with new Springs Gaskets and all the things that Operate there. They are a great outfit and work hard , plus I have used them several times before in the last 10 years, so I do not mind the extra expense. They certainly do a wonderfull job and are worth every Dollar it costs. Then the Garage Door had to go. Shelves Above and All-Around with Diving Items Stored and all, had to be removed permently so the New Design Door will have room and the Door Installation Men can ge-to the area, ha, ha. I also got their Automatic Remote Controlled Garage Door Opener and big German Motor Option( 1st Auto Garage Door we will have EVER owned in our life, ha, ha) so Cyndy will never have to open it ever again. She is a little person, about 5'4" and 96 pounds wet, ha, and back injuries from a bad car accident she was in before, the Doctor thinks. She never wants to complain so I have to watch her more closely now. She is having Upper Back Surgery this month, with a Fusion needed to also be done and a Cage installed in her uppr back vertebrae and all kinds of things the doctor syas is necessary and wants to do to help Cyndy. But then, in 2 months she must have her Lower Back Surgery done. I am Hopeing it will not require a fusion too. Doc says it very well may need that though. I am not sure but think the Lower Back Surgery will be the Worst and most Painfull for her. I did my Homework and found the Very Best Neurosurgeon in our County, so I have High Hopes that he will get Cyndy back in good shape again, where she can at least Vintage Dive again, with useing the smaller and lighter Scuba Tanks. I have a Ywin Set of 38 cu ft Tanks that only weighs 40 pounds and I have the NOS White Stag J-Vales for them. They are rubber o-ring seal Straight 1/2" Valves and Tanks so I am hopeing that lower weight will help. Already have 2 different Tank Dollys to use when moving the tans so that is Great noqw. One will carry 2 sets of Twin Tanks and uses large Bicycle Type Wheels with Special Fat Tires and goes through the Sand Very easilly now. We really miss our Vintage Diving. Cyndy's back problems are the main reason we could not go to Sand Dog1V this time. And it really sounded like it was a very Fun vintage Diving for everyone. I will send an email about the "Sea Hunt" Shows, when I find and watch them. That will be great fun. Thank you Jerry and take good care. William & Scubydoo,Cyndy, ha, ha.

The pull rod looks like it would work well with that configuration. It is amazing what information can be extracted from Sea Hunt. I saw an episode where Mike was walking away and the regulator was on upside down! Hey William, You and Cyndy were missed at SD4. Hope all goes well.

William,
I have a friend who had lower back surgery. Took awhile (two years); but, now she says all the pain is gone and she can do everything she used to do. I have back problems (disk missing L5 vertebrea - birth defect? - getting older? just turned 50); but, nuerosurgeon from VA hospital says I can dive. With this problem and diabetes I now limit myself to around thirty feet or so. I was trained for 150 ft. decompression diving; but, the doc treating me for diabetes said "no way" - it could take too long to surface. With the back problems, and sence I don't go to deep, I've thought about getting a hooka system. Maybe that would work for Cindy until she gets better. May have to keep weights away from her back. You should check with her nuerosurgeon and see if something this might work when she gets better. Make sure you get doctor approvial before doing any diving. Hey, Popular Mechanics had a home made two man sub back in the 1970 issue (I think it was August). If she loves the water as much as I do, that might be something to look at! We'll all pray she gets well fast and can in the future be back in the water!

"Thank you very much." Cyndy is having a Very hard time right now. She has Bone-Spurs in her upper vertebrae and a couple of very bad spots in her upper spine's joint areas too that need surgery very soon, her Neurosurgeon is telling us. She saw him in an emergency visit last Monday, he sent Cyndy for New MRIs the very next day, Tuesday and he wants to see him again on this coming Monday, April 8. One last visit to see the Neurosurgeon and see what changes have occurred in the problem areas of her back, looking at the MRI's just done, to double check her spine before scheduling surgery, I guess, with the new MRIs that she had done on last Tuesday. Then he says he will schedule her for the necessary surgery. She is having Surgery in the next month to her very Upper Back and Neck Areas. Her Doctor says she needs a Fusion and something about installing a Cage in her Vertebrae, and something else he is doing and there is No choice at all, because if she does Not go on and get it done soon now, there could be even More Serious Problems and much more Pain too. ( She has been putting it off I think, because she is so afraid of having major surgery like that.) But, an area of her back, near her neck is hurting more and more. Her arms and legs have a lot more of the Pain now, great tingleing and even numbness to some areas of her arms and legs. It is causeing her heart rate to go up too much and frequently, when her back is at it's worst and we went and got one of those blood pressure/heart rate reading things to see if is getting worse. It seems to go Up a lot and frequently in the evening and at nightime. She is not getting hardly any sleep at all it seems.( But then after her 1st surgery , in a couple of months after she recovers some from the 1st Surgery in her back and neck, the Neurosurgeon is telling us that she will need to go ahead with corrective surgery again, to her lower back, in the lumbar region, which is hurting Cyndy very much. ( It will be very Hard on Cyndy, I am afraid.) Right now, I have the privilidge of doing ALL the Grocery Shopping, the House Cleaning, the Laundry, the Cooking and then my "Favorite", Dishwashing, ha, ha. And I have a back injury problem too. Take good care.

William,
I wish the best for both of you. Things got to get better. Have faith; all things are possible.
Got to go. going to take kids to observatory. (don't get to dive alot now a days; so look at planets and stars). Probably might take more than my kids.

William, when it rains, it pours! I know that principal very well.
I hope Cyndy comes through just fine. A year and a half ago I had severe pain in my shoulder which did not allow my to lie down for a month. Turned out to be a herniated disc in my neck pinching a nerve. Heavy duty pain killers and anti-inflamatories allowed me to get a few hours of sleep each night---sitting up. I couldn't turn my head at all. Lying in the MRI machine was almost unbearable, even after a double dose of demoral and a morphine injection. Eventually it got better to the point I could lie down. Two things have kept me from the knife so far: 1) I now sit straight up and don't crane my neck while on the computer. If I do, I'm quickly reminded the next day to pay more attention! and, 2) sleeping with my neck supported, instead of leaving space under my neck for ventilation. I hate the feeling of sweat under my neck, but I hated the pain I went through worse! The longer she can avoid the surgery, the better. Pain will tell her when to have it done. I've heard too many people say that once one vertebra is fused, it isn't long until the ones on either side of it will need fusing as well, due to the additional wear put on the next discs when they take up the slack for the one that was fused. It's great that you did some research and found a good doctor. Just wait, if she can. I'm sure it will all work out well for her. She's in your good care, and it's a fairly routine surgery these days. My regards to Cyndy.
Check your tanks out again. You might want to rethink it. My twin 38s weigh 40 lbs empty, but my 72s are only 31 lbs. empty. Plus, the 38s are buoyant, so I need to wear an additional 4 lbs. of weight compared to my 72. In other words- short form- I actually end up wearing 13 pounds MORE weight with the 38s than with a 72. She would do better with a single 38, or maybe a 50. I'm sure you'll get it all figured out.

I think we're all on here together! I just read you last post, William. If she's in that much pain, then it's time to get it taken care of for sure! Best wishes. Keep us posted. Robert, come on! The Dacor looks nicer than that tank! Besides, I couldn't show the valve; I don't really have a J-valve on that tank!

Hi Duckbill "Thank you so much for those Kind Thoughts and Words my friend." You are very a nice gentleman. And I really appreciate your kind words too Scubadiverbob. You are Very thoughtfull and a Nice man too. Thank you both, Very much. I am really Worried about little Cyndy. She is a very sweet person that has Never hurt anyone nor anything in her entire life. She is just a good person, to be honest. It hurts me so much to see her in that pain. Duckbill and Scubadiverbob, I will tell Cyndy the nice things you'll have said. She is in really bad shape right now, doing ok during the day, but as the evenings and nightime comes on, it gets much worse. She does not really have a choice whether she has the surgery or not because it is getting much worse each week. I was Surprised that this has been going on for a year now getting worse ech month, untill this last month it has gotten much worse much Faster. She has never wanted to complain, and just trying to hide it from me and has been just putting it Off as best she could. The Doctor wanted to do the surgery 7 months ago but then she stopped going to her appointments, hopeing it might get better. She does Not want to have surgery, because she is so Afraid. But she can No Longer put it off. I think that the bone spurs in her vertebrae are somehow digging into the large nerves in the spine in those areas. The Doctor is a Teaching Neurosurgeon also and is said to be the Very Best Anywhere, so I am leaveing it up to him and Cyndy. Hopefully, all will be much better after she recovers some from the surgery. I found out that at a Swimming Pool near us at the Cape Coral Marina Complex, they have Swimming Times for older people, to use the pool for them to excersize only each morning untill about 11AM and I think that if she later on, will let me take here there each day and gets mild excercise like that, in the large pool, it should help a great amount in her building back good muscles and healing up better too. Yes, when we finally get back to Vintage Scuba Diving, I will have her all set up with the Very lightest Scuba Tank and light equipment and I will Carry her Scuba Tank into the water and out when she is done diving. No more Lifting for her for quite a long time I think. Thanks again and Best Wishes for you. William & Cyndy

William, I'm sure she's heard this a million times, but just keep reminding her that the surgeons do these vertebral operations on a regular basis. They are pros, and the procedures have really become second nature to them. I understand how she feels, though. I'm not looking forward to surgery myself, but if it inevitable, then it just needs to be done. In the end, she'll be glad she did it. With bone spurs, get it taken care of before any serious damage takes place. I guess I should clarify. That is 13 more pounds OUT OF WATER. In the water, I really only sometimes notice the extra 4 lbs. around my waist. Taking the tank(s) into the water for her, like you said, would obviously be the way to go. She may or may not need extra weight on her belt while wearing the twin 38s depending on the buoyancy of yours. Cross that bridge waaay down the road when she feels better.
