Can anyone tell me what era or years the basket harness would have been used? And yes I agree that simonbeans work is outstanding.

Robohips77,
The basket harness was the original harness used on the single 71.2, and I believe it was in the original USD catelog (although I don't have it to look). I do know that it was in use when the photos for Dive, The Complete Book of Skin Diving[/B] by Rick & Barbara Currier was printed in 1955.
William,
I've been following the discussion about Cyndy, and note that she seems to be a very strong individual. It seems that this is an appropriate time. The surgery could help her significantly. I would suggest that you both get a lot of information concerning how to prevent infection, as that may be a greater hazard than the surgery itself. Talk to the surgeon about infection prevention, and how both (s)he in the operating room and you post-surgery can work together to prevent infection of the wound. This is very important in back surgery involving the vertebra. Also ask about the infection rate in the hospital that you are scheduled for, and check the infection rates at other hospitals. Talk to the surgeon about these rates, and what specific measures that they have in place to ensure that post-operative infection is a minimal hazard (it cannot be eliminated altogether). Finally, ask what you can do at home to minimize the potential for infection.
Concerning diving after the surgery, let that take a back burner for awhile. She'll know when she is ready. Then, the measures that Duckbill was talking about could help a lot. What is nice about being in Florida is the warm water, which minimizes the amount of weight you need to use. There are a lot of really good dive sites in fresh water too (my favorite is Alexander Springs State Park). Definitely take her tank to the water, and let her get into it in the water (as Duckbill suggested).

Robohips (sounds like you've had surgery yourself!?), my June, 1955 USD catalog advertizes harnesses having metal cylinder bands, no harness types. While the harness types were in use in 1955 (Sea Hunt's first season shows plenty of basket harnesses, and that was in 1958), USD was no longer offering them. Maybe other manufacturers were still offering them in '55. In fact, the ones in Sea Hunt were more than likely Voit. That's the best I can do for you, but that is a very good question. I'm curious myself when the cutoff year was.

Hi John "Thank you for the Very Good advice. I was not even thinking of a possibility of infection in her spine area but you have brought up a Serious Thought that needs all you are adviseing me about. I Will talk to her Doctors and Nurses and everyone that will be in contact with Cyndy in the hospital and later, at home then. I especially need to be carefull myself, when careing for her. Thank you again and take good care. William

The latest USD ILLUSTRATION I could find showing a basket harness is from the 1959 catalog; But, that one is shown on a 40 (44) cf cylinder as a "Women's 1-Tank Block", which is undoubtedly just one cylinder from the standard USD 3-tank block of the time. A reproduction basket harness for this size cylinder is for sale here by Dan: www.vintagescubasupply.com/access.html
