Someone gave me a couple of steel 72's one was a 54 Broxton Ave tank. Which means that I finally have dive gear older than me. It currently has a newer 1/2" tapered valve. I would like it to be somewhat correct, did those older tanks take a standard "J" valve or did they take what some call an "I" valve (on/off valve on top). Now to find a regulator of the same age to go with it.

I think most USD tanks used the 'I' valve. I've not seen one that old that didn't. First, I'd PM Dan and see if he has one. If not, I'd check out the seller one_more_chance_scuba on e-bay. He might just have one. Almost all the stuff I bought from him was in almost new condition; but , if you ask him he has some stuff that is in repairable condition.

Tim, I can tell you that USD had J-valves back at least as far as 1955.
What is the year and pressure on your tank? Is the original hydro "+"ed? A 2150 psi (+ 10%) tank is a "70", not a 72.
Congrats on your find.

It has a 1954 original hydro with a +, it has a current hydro and I will be doing a visual on it soon. I may have an I valve laying around that I may be able to service.

The J-valve in 1953 was a different configuration, with the port offset on the J-valve lever body. The 1955 J-valve was the more familiar configuration, with the port directly under the on/off valve. I don't know which was sold in 1954.
My 1955 USD catalog shows that "70"s were being sold then. They are the same size as the later 72s, but with a marked pressure of 2150 psi, instead of the 2250 of the 72s. Some manufacturers offered 72s for the first time around 1959/60, but USD made the change sometime between 1955 and 1959.

time2dive,
The 'R' valve, the reserve valve you called an 'I' valve, appears in my US Divers 1955 catalog at $14.95. The 'J' valve (or 'J1' as it is listed), was $30.00. The 'R' valve does not appear in my 1954 catalog.
At that time they used a flat washer, not an O ring. I would suggects an O ring valve, as they look about the same and are less prone to leak. It appears you could use the easier to find 'K' or 'J' valves and be close enough. I hope that helps.

BOTH types of J valves were used in 1954. The more common one with the reg mounting to the "post" appeared about mid year. My broXton tank is dated 7/54. It has a wide face j valve dated 11/54. It takes the nylon washer which is very hard, and wider than the "o" ring which came along later. You will see many of the older broXtons with the yoke screw ears bent from over tightening to get a good seal on the nylon washer. I go to ace hardware and buy the thick washers of hard rubber material, and trim down the outer edge for a fine fit. The reg seals perfectly on the wide soft face of the rubber material. Dan has one of the early side mount j valves from 53 to early 54. It is a very rare piece!

I found an old Dacor post J valve that I may try and rebuild, I also have an old Voit standard J valve that I may use.
