Does anyone know anyhting about the 'history' of why Aqua Lung used a 1-1/2" mouthpiece vs others' 1" mouthpieces?
Did it offer any better performance, etc?

The first AquaLungs did not have the flapper valves in the mouthpiece. So, the original hoses are a smaller diameter inside to make the unit more responsive, since it pulls a vacuum all the way from the duckbill on the exhaust side, plus up to the diaphragm on the right. That was the reason they eventually ended up putting a flapper on the exhaust hose in addition to the duckbill valve up on the end of the hose when they went to the "easy clear" mouthpiece. It directed all the vacuum to the right. Then they were able to go to a bigger hose diameter to improve air flow.
