Hello, Vintage Divers!
The 3rd Annual Vintage Dive Assembly is scheduled once again for the first weekend in August at Lake Wazee near Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Official dates will be Thursday-Sunday, August 3-6, 2006. Reserve a spot on your calendar now so that you can attend the event. Participation nearly doubled last year, and we are hoping for an even greater turn-out this year.
Last year at Wazee, some of us chatted about the possibility of exploring new territory in 2006, and Linda did extensive research looking for a suitable location. Some of our main concerns in the search was to find a site that was centrally located (within reason) so that divers from all over the country can attend, and one with interesting diving and suitable camping facilities. We did not find a spot that offered more than Wazee, and so it's back to Wazee.
We hope to have a brainstorming session soon, by live chat, and all of you will be invited to attend. If you have any suggestions regarding activities, events, presentations, guest speakers, or if you would like to do a presentation yourself, please let us know. We can't wait to hear your ideas!
Stay tuned for chat date and time... We will let you know soon.
Dan

Back in the early 1970's I worked for a business at McHenry Illinois. Near there was a quarry, a deep very clear quarry with a swimming area on one end. The quarry was over 100 feet deep, and was VERY clear. I dove to 90 feet to explore a 1949 ford coupe with the shifter still up in 2nd, obviously drove in there by some kids playing "chicken" back in the 50's. If you would find that place it was a mile better than wazee. It was so good I remember it 35 years later. There was a very sandy beach on one end of it, and sheer stone cliffs dropping down to the old cars, and a yellow bus too which had come to rest there. Underwater the cliffs were not straight down. They sloped, and thats where the cars were. I only went to 90 feet or so. It went way further than that. Is there anyone up that way who would recognise that place so it could be checked out? I sure would like to go there again. It wasent over toward the Dells, it was nearer Lake Geneva I think. Welcome Home Dan. Chucko

I just joined the forum and saw this older thread.... diving the Chicago area since '66, the only quarry's I'm familiar with are Lemont in SW Chicago suburbs and the Racine Quarry - about 25 miles due east of Lake Geneva in Racine, WI. Both of them were big check-out spots, Racine had a beach and was "legal". Lemont required permission from the owner - which we always got. Funny how I remember Racine as being cold, dark and nasty - a major diving turn-off. But maybe it improved in the 70"s.

I got certified at racine quarry in 1963 and it was crystal clear....now you can't see your hand in front of your face. its a shame how bad the visibility has gotten, red granite west of oshkosh had at least 70' viz back at that time. what i wouldn't give for that again.
