I'm new to the forum but wanted to say Hello to an old friend. John, it was good to see you in Tacoma last April. Too bad we didn't have more time to talk. Sid

Sid,
Good to hear from you too. I'm not too far away, and we should get together sometime. I have a book that I bought years ago for you, that U/W photography book (I now have two copies). So PM me, or give me a call (I think you have my card). I'd like to come over sometime and shoot the breeze. I may have my UDS-1 back together and functioning again too.
By the way, welcome to the forum. We have a great bunch of divers here.
John

Between October 2nd and 21st my schedule is wide open (except for the grandson's soccer matches on Saturdays). Let's do lunch.

Welcome to the forum Sid. I've met you at a couple HDS Conferences and if I haven't said it before, thanks for all the great work you do through the HDS. My son lives close to you & John, maybe one of these days I'll be able to get together with you guys.

Thanks for the kind words, Dale. I do enjoy the HDS as I get to meet a lot of very interesting prople and have learned a lot about diving history through the Society. My particular focus (no pun intended) is the history of underwater photography. I've also been able to delve into the history of diving in the Pacific Northwest. Fascinating stuff.

Sid,
We need to talk a bit about the history of diving in the Pacific Northwest. I started here in 1959 or so, making my first descent on scuba sometime before using a USD Aquamatic in about four feet of water in Lake Oswego. I got my first scuba set from picking strawberries and beans in the area around Salem, and picked up a Healthways Scuba regulator with a 38 cf tank (yellow, as I recall). In high school, we formed a club, the Salem Junior Aqua Club, associated with the Salem Aqua Club, and for several years dove with them in various places, including Hood Canal. Somewhere I still have some photos from that era.
Dale,
Let me know when you'll be in the area, as I'd enjoy sharing info with you and showing some of my scuba units and regs too.
John

John, Yes, those were the days. I got the money for my first wetsuit the same way, and for the first several years (scuba class in McMinnville in 1960), all of my equipment was bought used. I think the first new piece of gear I bought was a White Stag wetsuit that I picked up at White Stag in downtown Portland. I wish I had known there was a club in Salem. I was living, and still live, in Perrydale, near Dallas. My favorite tanks were twin 38's. My dream is a 20 pound, mixed gas rebreather, about the size of the family bible.

Sid, You talked above about buying a White Stage wet suit. I had a cousin who worked for White Stag, and so bought this suit from the Portland store in about 1962 or so: It was a White Stag custom wet suit, with no nylon (before nylon, or "BN"). John
