Posted a re-edited video on Youtube showing some clips from the 1991 proving tests of the Nautilus Minisub; followed by some footage of our 20,000 Leagues diving suits underwater here in Hawaii, 2007. Some previously unseen stuff, and a little better editing than what I've done in the past. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vghVABLT6esVBR, Pat

this may not be the right conduit to explore my question; however, would anybody know if Disney had the "nautilus" down in the Bahamas in 1953? I have heard that some of the underwater scenes were shot there. The question is was the or a "nautilus" there also?

Hi Crowsnest 3 ! The short answer to your question is, "No". Disney never built a manned, functional Nautilus submarine. For the movie, they used a full-sized waterline deck set; a 22-foot waterline model mounted on a dolly that was towed through a sersen tank to simulate surface running scenes; and the 11-foot "Hero" model used for the underwater running scenes where we see the entire boat: all of which were filmed in California and never made it to the Bahamas. The majority of the underwater diving scenes were filmed at Lyford Cay in the Bahamas from January through February of 1954. Some additional scenes (like inside the sunken treasure ship) were shot in California. What they DID have in the Bahamas were two large props: one simulating the exterior bottom keel / diving hatch area; and another simulating the bottom tail fin and propellor area. These were full sized props of those partial areas of the sub's hull, filmed along with the divers as they exited, entered, or worked on the boat underwater. You can find pictures of this sort of thing on my website: icon to the left. Hope this helps. VBR, Pat
