...dive operators about diving with equipment & configurations that aren't "standard" according to current training? I suppose it's ok if I'm accompanied by a buddy who's on the same page as me but what if I show up without him?
BTW, this past August, there was a guy a Shark's Cove diving what looked like a Snark. Big dude. Know who that might be?

I guess you are right about most dive operations, the average 20 year old divemaster/dive guide, would have no idea how to rate the vintage gear.
At the last two dive operations I have worked for, we saw rebreathers, scooters, and trimix divers.
At dive Oahu, I am the senior dive instructor/guide. So I have no problem with the vintage gear.
Working vintage gear, not, corroded 1979, gear that has problems.
If you can convince me that you know how to use the gear, then lets dive it.
Big dude at sharks cove?, sorry no idea. I have seen very little Vintage gear in use here on Oahu.
The first one I saw was a guy diving a 1970's royal Aquamaster, He had the reg on backwards, and diving Nitrox to boot.
The second ones are just my friends doing dives with my gear.
Sorry , never met Lawlor Rick, as I have only been here for 10 years.

I also noticed you're hooked to DiveOahu. Did you meet Lawlor Reck? I filled-in as a safety diver for one of his classes back in '71 (or was it '72?). Saw him again in the mid-90's just before he passed away in '99.
