Heinke merged with Siebe Gorman in the early 1960s. Thereafter equipment appears to have been labelled "Siebe-Heinke", or so it appears in my 1964 Lillywhites catalogue advertising a Siebe-Heinke "Merlin" breathing set (£55 7s ) and a latex Siebe-Heinke Dip Suit (£10 13s 9d). So if the company name on the regulator is "Heinke" and not "Siebe-Heinke", it's likely to predate 1961. A further lead is on the Historical Diving Society site at www.thehds.com/publications/hdt_index.htm. The index lists a reference in the "Historical Diving Times" to "Heinke, diving manufacturers, demand valves 13(15)". You can contact the HDS at info@thehds.com to purchase a back copy. Hope this helps. David

Thank you David for your reply. We came across HDS about 1yr ago joined but they dont have a lot on Heike. It seems that when Siebe took over they just brushed Heike under the carpet with the medals, which is a shame really. With the info we have it seems that Siebe took all the praise for someone elses inventions just because he was a manufacturer. From what we can work out is that he improved on what was already there.

Hi
The reg you have is a Heinke Mk I. This was Heinke's first production regulator. Its pretty much the same as the MK II, except the MK II had a bypass valve on the side which essentially looked like a bicycle brake lever with a rope attached. This would cause the reg to free-flow should you have a 1st stage failure. Collectively the MK I and Mk II were called the "horned" heinkes due to the exhaust valves sticking out on each side. It was deisgned this way to get around Cousteau's patent. Someting about the exhaust being 4" from the center of the reg, not 100% on the details there. They are not handles!
As to the age, its in the serial # N35845. It was made in the 3rd month of 1958, and the number was 45. Not sure what 45 stood for, but I've confirmed with a knowledgeable UK collector that the "358" is the date, month then year.
Hope this helps...I have one of the prototypes of this reg. Identical to yours, but that the guts of the first stage had been redesigned a bit for production, and its red.
Hope this helps
Regards Neil

Thanks Neil. That's another piece of info to add to our puzzle. Was it Vintage Aqualung you spoke to??? If it was have they changed email? I did try sending them the pic in an email but it kept returning. Kim
