Howdy everyone- I haven't been on the board for a while but I thought I would share a short dive video I just made. Yesterday duckbill and I dove the Feather River during the annual salmon run there. The current was strong but we managed to hug the bottom and didn't have any real issues. The vis was down also prob from the amount of water spilling over the dam. We had a great dive watching the crawdad's consume the dying salmon on the bottom of the 54deg water. duckbill was wearing his parkway sharkskin suit and you could see air bobbles sticking in the small groves of the suit. it made the suit kinda shimmer u/w. I spent last night and this morning editing the video so I hope you enjoy. time for beer now Jerry

Jerry, Glad you was able to finally dive it. Looks like the crawdads (lobsters) finished eating the salmon. I'm sure it's the same one I took a photo of. Don't you think they might want to have dinner with me sometime? To bad DF&G made it where you can't invite them to dinner! Maybe you could put this photo in the video and everyone will think they eat faster than they do! (see attachment taken a week before your dive). Guess DWR is still draining the lake, so people in So. Cal. can fill their swimming pools, and creating a drought .... Any water left in Folsom Lake, or is it just a dried up mud puddle? Sometime show me how to edit video's, ok? I have one where the salmon swam right up to myself and Andrew. I'm just unlearned on all the digital stuff (used nikonos equipment all my life).

Nice video, Jerry. It turned out clearer than I thought it would, considering the vis. Thanks for the dive.
The sharkskin is old, and the stiff straps on my military harness took their toll on the shoulders and armpits. From now on I'm only diving cotton webbing with that suit. I was looking forward to diving that suit on the September 6th dive, but I was also thinking about diving the twin 38s again that day. Decisions, decisions.
Robert, we did find the salmon that we saw, and it was nearly done. But we also found a new, whole salmon that the crawfish had barely started on. It's the one Jerry was checking out. Once the crawfish get through the skin, it's easy munchin'.

Glad you can make it, Jay. I have some wetsuit repair of my own to do too. Tell me about it! I used to take crawfish by the bucket load from this area. I love crawfish etouffee. I would/could still be taking them, were it not for an ambiguity in the Fish&Game regulations. I don't need the hassle of court time presenting my case just for some "mudbugs"! Check it out. F&G regs center around trout and salmon. When a section of river is closed to take of trout and salmon, it is closed to all other fishing, with exceptions. "Chapter 3, Article 3, Section 7.50 (a)(1)...Every body of water listed below (which includes our section of river) is closed to all fishing except during the open season as shown... (a)(2)Unless otherwise provided, waters closed to trout and salmon fishing are closed to fishing for all other species, except that these closures do not apply to fishing for amphibians..., freshwater clams...., crayfish (see Section 5.35), and lamprey...., using legal fishing methods other than hook-and-line fishing,......" Section5.35 for crayfish states.... "(a) Open season: All year, except closures listed in subsection (d) of this Section (none of which apply to this section of river). (b) Limit: No limit. (e) The season closures in Chapter 3 (see above) (District Trout and Salmon Special Regulations) do not apply to crayfish fishing with methods other than hook-and-line (see Sections 7.00 and 7.50(a)(2))."Our section of river is listed in Article 3, Section 7.50(b)(68)(A). The Open Season and Special Regulations for that section state "Closed to all fishing all year"SO, The question is, since there is an exception for crayfishing during a fishing closure as long as you use a method other than hook-and-line (i.e. hand catching), wouldn't that exception apply in this case? The intent of the regulation is to aid enforcement by effectively prohibiting people from fishing a closed area with hook-and-line and saying, "Oh, I'm just fishing for crayfish or lamprey" (Yeah, right, Bud) On the other hand, is "closed to all fishing" for this (or any other) section of river an unstated exception to the exception? It doesn't fit with the intent of the regulations, and it isn't expressly stated anywhere in the regulations, but the local head F&G guy apparently has taken the stance that "closed to all fishing" in this case really does mean "closed to all fishing", in spite of the crayfish exception during closures. See what I mean?

It was fun shooting & editing the short video. --------------------------------------- Sorry Jay I won't be able to to make the dive on the 6th. I was planing on using the triples again and meeting you but it is not in the cards for that day. We need to plan a date for a vintage dive get together sometime in the future. Jerry

Duckbill, crayfish aren't fish; the zoologist in my cringes, which is why I call the crawdads. They are crustaceans, and they were introduced into California from Oregon and Washington. Technically, you can call them the signal crayfish, or Pacifastacus leniusculus. You can truthfully say that you are not "fishing" at all, as crawdads are not fish (you know, no backbone--they are invertebrates), and simply say you're catching Pacifastacus leniusculus by hand to take them back to Oregon where they belong.
