Shadow Divers on Video... - From the best selling book, Shadow Divers, this is the Nova TV version of the story. There are 8 parts to it. The story is true to the book with a bit more general U-Boat history from films and a bit less of the extensive historical research done by Chatterton and Kohler. The 230 foot deep inside the wreck video clips are the actual footage shot by Chatterton as described in the book. Wow...
- What's this got to do with Vintage Scuba? Well, these guys were wreck diving down to 230 feet depth on open circuit Scuba. This is before Tri Mix and before Re-Breathers. One diver passed out from oxygen poisoning and was lost (died). Two others died after they ran out of air, panicked from nitrogen narcosis, surfaced without decompressing, and suffered massive decompression sickness. Early (in the book) there's a description of the various "styles" of diving used by deep wreck divers. Some felt the buddy system would just get two divers killed. Others used a buddy. It's kind of interesting considering the discussions we've had on Solo diving. - I am amazed at the courage of these divers. Those three guys that died had a great impact on the other divers in the wreck diving community. Some quit diving altogether. Some quit deep wreck diving. And some just quit diving on the U-Boat. I'm always just diving for fun. I can't imagine the horror of seeing my dive buddies die. And then having the courage (or whatever) to go back out 60 miles into the ocean and dive again.

It's still available on DVD. For 10 or 11 bucks, I thought it was a bargain and bought a copy.
As far as discussion on a vintage diving site goes - just look at the diving scenes: Double al80's... No one is diving those anymore. And did you check out the dive lights? Not an LED to be scene. I think I can see an MR12 in one view of the dive boat also.
I guess if I was to comment on how vintage it looks, I'd only remind people that most of this was from the mid 90's, so about 20 years ago.... I can only imagine how things will change again in the next 20 years.
Thanks for sharing Eben. Great video and a great book.
