My wife and I stumbled across "Amphibian Man" from 1961 last night. This is a fun and extremely quirky movie: imagine if “The Mermaids of Tiburon” and the old “Speed Racer” cartoons were mashed together to make a film! What you’d get is a wonderful strangeness of free-diving and exotic locals that are so idealized, that you have to wonder what people were thinking: Mexican policemen wearing sombreros as part of their regular uniforms and newspaper men wearing plus-fours, you know golf pants, and so many more little things too numerous to list. How could a Soviet film be made without being political; this one certainly wasn’t. It’s the old party line theme: rich people are ALWAYS villains, talk of creating a society where people can be free from their oppressors, and a superman to come along and feed the starving children. Gosh, you mean someone needs to pay for that stuff I just doled out, but everyone knows that street vendors get their wares for free from the evil tyrants who oppress society, right? The musical score is top notch if you like early electronica. Evidently, this is the Soviet equivalent to Star Wars: EVERYONE loves this movie and saw it growing up. It had an estimated eight million dollar budget and shot in Azerbaijan. www.mondo-digital.com/amphibian.htmlIf you have a Roku, you can get a free channel called, "Acolyte Cimema": it's in the "Weird Science" area.
