So I've had more luck with my wants ads, and have scored a really nice pair of Healthways tanks with HW valves and a Dacor with a nice j-valve with the pressure port. They all passed hydro and I Have less than a Franklin in these . I now have a HW tank with the correct valve for my Airflo too. I'll get pics of them together when I can clean them up some. Have a look: The snow in the background pics is for you JB. I think I have enough tanks now. Or maybe I'll start collecting by year of manufacture. Just kidding...

Oh, and I like that you can see the Sherwood logo on that HW-valve, or perhaps the Healthways nomenclature on the Sherwood valve: proof positive now that Sherwood did the actual manufacturing!

So is this similar to a DIR valve? Jaybird

You mean DIN? Similar but it looks narrower. I no longer have any DIN regs so I can'nt check that way, but some of my valves have the DIN insert for yoke use. I'll spin one out later and compare for you.

DD, I remember you getting a hold of an Airflo valve a while ago. Do any of yours have the HP port like this one?

I don't think so. In fact, I'm sure they don't. I have two or three now and they all have the plastic reserve handle. Nice valve!!! Makes sense though as there are NO additional ports at all on that first stage. They did provide a yoke adapter so I could use it with one of my other valves with the HP port. Thanks for sharing. Do you have an Airflo? DD

I do not have an Airflo. I looked up the pics shared on SB, and noticed the valve looks like the one I have, but the SB photos have a burst disk in the HP port. It left me wondering if the valve he has did actually come with the Airflo, or was it made some time after. The only markings on the valve I have are "Made in the USA". I do have a neat Healthways gauge with the Airflo thread, that screws directly into the valve. I will get some pics this week.

I know a couple other members who have the pressure checker but no Airflo. I like the quirky little thing, if only for its uniqueness. I stumbled across mine when looking at Craigslist. The listing was pretty generic and didn't mention the brand of regulator, just "old Scuba gear". I also got a steel 38 and Sweet Stars n Stripes steel 72. DD

DiverDon how do the insides look on the visuals?

I did not look into the tanks with the 1/2" neck as my tanks light will not fit. I checked the dacor and it has the internal coating. It looked OK. The hydro facility will reject any tank with rust. I have several waiting for tumbling because they turned them away.

As a tank visual inspector some of these vintage tanks can get pit corrosion pretty bad if they had moisture and sat for decades. I'm suspect on the liners as you cannot see the walls. Having a small light that fits would be a good thing on the 1/2 necks. I tend to be suspicious of tank coatings and liners that can hide corrosion. You can tumble out that liner as well. Painted tanks are better to see whats going on compared to vinyl coated ones. I'm sure Charlie can chime in on this as he has tons of experience looking in small dark places. All my old steelies and I have a pile are all just galvanized coatings but you can see the problems if they show up. I get that you like them for the vintage looks just saying careful. And be extra careful .

Having a small light that fits would be a good thing on the 1/2 necks. I agree. Someone else recommended a pen light and I'm beginning to think I need to find one soon. I already have about 10 steel 72s 4 of which have 1/2" necks. I only use two, both Healthways with the straight valves. The o-rings are thick but seem finicky about which regulators they want to work with. The other two are a White Stag and Dacor 1/2" J-valves. They are in hydro but I want to inspect them before using them. Of course my local hydro facility will do visuals but they're 90 miles away so I'll be picking up a new light before summer I tend to be suspicious of tank coatings and liners that can hide corrosion. You can tumble out that liner as well.
I have read this before and I may make a tumbler but that project is on a (way) back burner right now. I did pick up a working clothes dryer motor that should help with that project, but again, not this year. Painted tanks are better to see whats going on compared to vinyl coated ones.I agree. I have several, and I too prefer the galvanized tanks but I get what I can and rely on the hydro facility to let me know if a tank should be tumbled or scrapped. I have cut up several for display at their recommendation, and looking inside I'm glad I did. I'm sure Charlie can chime in on this as he has tons of experience looking in small dark places.
Now thats creepy All my old steelies and I have a pile are all just galvanized coatings but you can see the problems if they show up. I get that you like them for the vintage looks just saying careful. And be extra careful .Thank you! I keep a cautious eye on these old tanks. I submerged them in the bathtub for a little bubble test and found two of the three have a fine mist of air coming out of their burst disks. Its very fine but definitely there. I need to order new plugs for these. Its the first time I saw a leak from the area of a burst plug. Thanks again! DD

I just replaced the plugs on my Double 72's because I saw a very tiny leak coming from them. Now no more leaks.

Of course you realize that you now have no excuse for running out of air next weekend at Fortune Pond!
