Ryan
I gree with you 100%, the last time I saw several complete set ups like that was in 1998 when the Cousteau society had a tribute to cousteau with an exibit in the Biosphere in Montreal Canada. Its noble to hope/ask that the set be put up on public display and or put in a museum but the winning bidder has the last word, lets hope it yours.

Ryan,
Good luck, I think you have a chance at it. I was looking closely at the photos over the weekend, and significant parts of the Cousteau quad scuba unit appear to be missing. It looks like the chest piece, for instance, is only the inner part of that piece. The outer part looked different, and coupled to the unit differently. Be that as it may, this is a historic piece of equipment, and as I said earlier in this thread, these photos are our first look ever inside the unit. Now, if I could figure out where the first stage is...

The wetsuit appears to be nylon on the outside, which would mean it certainly does not date to the 50s.... BD

Hi
I think the seller just used that date as a generalisation of the gear. Perhaps the suit is some what newer but is a Cousteau team original.

The equipment is a mismatched bunch. The tank set was developed for the Undersea World TV series (1968-1976) The housing is incomplete and the over the shoulder portion of the breastplate is missing. The detailing has also been left off. They used stripped down versions similar to this in later years, they can be seen in Life at the End of the World (1974). The wetsuit does not belong with the housing it from the Cousteau Cousteau Odyssey series (1977-1982) and was used up until the Cuba Expedition (1986). The wetsuit would have been used with the Technisub tank set that I just finished restoring. The helmet is also a mismatch. It is more like the silver ones used in later years but that shape would not have been produced in that color scheme. Even my Cousteau contacts did not recognize it. It is possible that it is from a transitional period between the yellow and black color scheme and the Silver. The only thing I'm sure of is that it doesn't go with the suit or the housing. The fins are however a match with the suit, and the other items were almost certainly not Cousteau at all.
It would be nice to reunite the different pieces with their appropriate counterparts. If I win the auction I will have original pieces that span the entire duration of Cousteau's TV career:) -Ryan

Thanks for the support. That’s the way it goes. I will find other equipment. Networking is far more efficient than eBay. I was most excited to get that collection because it was such a mix. Nothing belongs together but it all matches up with Items I already have. The complete set would have made a nice collection for a Museum one day. I would have had a complete set representing the entire run of Cousteau's TV series. That would be truly unique. Together the items would have been far more historically significant than the items in the auction by them selves. I just want to bring the pieces of the story back together since they have been so scattered to the wind. I was really looking forward to the restoration process. I even had all the contacts lined up. Hopefully the new owner will be able to restore it to its original splendor. The joy of youth is that time is on my side.-Ryan
And don't worry I still have some fun new stuff for the Wazee get together;)

Yeah, what Dave said... The high bidder is in Spain - did you see? I wonder if the deal will work out. Most people are honest, I think, but a foreign transaction always complicates things.... Maybe you still have a chance, Ryan!

It seems like things might work out. I am working on a deal to do the restoration of the equipment for the owner which would mean making molds of the original so I would have a perfect replica of the original design and he would have the equipment restored to its original form. I will keep you guys posted if I reach a deal with the owner. I also may be receiving a real silver helmet from another contact. In the world of collecting what goes around comes around. -Ryan
