With all the fun recently overhauling my USD Aquarius and Scubapro regs I got enthused and thought I would overhaul my old Kawasaki J1 unbalanced piston first stage. The second stage is around somewhere... I had learned to dive on this reg attached to a J valved 72 cu ft (just left school no funds for a SPG till much later!) but had long relegated this 1970's era reg to the garage, providing air for a parts cleaning gun... hadn't been serviced in over a decade at least. Once pulled down I was surprised at how well designed it actually was... certainly no cut-price engineering by the Japanese back in the day, note the Teflon thrust washers on the piston head and stem! All bores were in excellent condition under the accumulated goop, so after a quick ultrasonic clean, l lightly greased the o-rings (which were still pliable) reassembled it and put it back for another stint as my garage workhorse These seem similar to an early USD Deepstar reg but with some 'enhancements'... does anyone have any more history?

WOW, very cool--how fun! Again, it's the same as the Scuba star if you'll notice: What does the second stage look like? JB

JB Yes very similar to the Scuba Star... but Kawasaki added two Teflon thrust washers. Will have to look for the second stage, it was also in pretty good condition when I last looked at it... rubber bits all perfect as it was stored under cool conditions out of sunlight. However, I've recently moved house and its in a box somewhere in the garage!

You do know you can get all he o-rings you want at just about any hardware store right?!?!?!? You don't need special scuba specific o-rings I'll be that you could swap those gizzards with a USD Calypso. As I remember Kawi stuff was cloned from USD gear: I could be wrong JB

I never even had a clue that Kawasaki made a single hose reg? I had heard of a double hose reg, but that is it, never seen one, then again I live in Ohio, US and not sure I've been within 500 miles of one? Anyway, that is one thing I love about this site, learning new things. Hope the 2nd stage gets located and we can see the whole thing. Mark

Aha... thanks J200 it is indeed... of course my purge label disappeared long ago Interesting that the J200 unbalanced and the X200 balanced both had the same air flow rate of 560 L/min Will check the garage on the weekend, I'm pretty sure I know where it is!
