This is literally old news and I apologize if it has been discussed before. I searched but found no mention.
Dated Dec 9, 1977
U.S. Divers Co., Santa Ana, California, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), today announced a voluntary recall of all of its scuba regulators sold after December 1, 1976. A very substantial number of regulators is involved. The regulators were distributed nationwide.
The recalled regulators may have a potentially defective clamp ring which may cause unseating of the second stage regulator diaphram. The second stage is that portion of the regulator which the diver holds in his mouth. The unseating of this diaphram could result in the regulator being flooded with water and the air flow to the diver being cut off.
The recalled scuba regulators were sold under the name of U.S. Divers and/ or the following model names: Conshelf XII; Conshelf Supreme; Calypso J; Calypso IV; Aquarius; Octopus; and Hookah. The model name and/or-U.S. Divers appears on the product on the purge button.
Anyone had experience with this and/or know what the bad rings look like? I only have a Calypso 2 (I think, with red label) and probably bought it in 1976.

I started working as a scuba tec in 1978. I don't recall seeing this recall, but it's not like US Divers sent out emails with technical bulletins like the do now. US Divers has always been very proactive with recalls. If a potential problem exists, they take care of it. We've dealt with many recalls since then, many of which were for very minor or unlikely problems.
US Divers second stages from this era included the built year in the serial number. If your's end's in 76 or 77 then this recall may apply.
Good Dives, Charlie

This was a real recall. Here is the CPSC website announcement. www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/1977/scuba-equipment-recalledSaying that, I believe that the affected regulators were probably already taken care of. But just in case, inspect your clamp rings if you have these regulators. Since there is no expiration date, you may still be able to get replacement clamp rings from Aqualung. I will check mine too.
