Looking at some old Skin Diver Mags from the 70’s got me to thinking. This may be a bold statement but here goes; there were more developments in scuba equipment and instruction from 1970 to 1980 then any other 10 year period or for that matter at any time put together. Think about this, in the 1970 US Divers Catalog there is no BC listed for sale, only swimmer vests. We entered the ‘70’s with a very limited choice of flotation vest and by 1980 had back BC’s (at-pac, BCP ect) and jacket styles. Consider even the accepted use of spg’s, power inflators and octo’s. There were full fledged dive computers by 1980 (decobrain), and extremely high performance regulators that have not changed all that much today. Would anyone disagree or can you think of any other developments in that period??

Yes, I too would agree, the 70s is the period in which diving like so many other things took a turn for the worse. All the junk that came out, plastic regulators, the end of Voit, Healthways, USD/Aqualung, Sportsways and the emergence of such junk companies as Tabata and Tusa and who knows what as well as the take over of diving by Padi and the subsequent degeneration of instruction and conversion of Skindiver Magazine into a travel brochure for Padi. Yep, I miss the 70s. James

I miss skin divers inexpensive wetsuits. They did the job for me and if they were still around, I'd get one for my son.
