If you look in the second image you can see that the bird's flight feathers were damaged, those furthest out. They don't mention it in the story but when they do a feather transplant, they cut the feather off between the vane and shaft: 1. Vane 2. Rachis 3. Barb 4. Afterfeather 5. Hollow shaft, calamus then glue a small tube into a donor feather and that is glued onto the shaft that's still in the bird Jaybird
