I’m sure this will be an odd question, but how did dive shops or dive boats rack their steel 72s back in the day? Most tanks didn’t have any kind of boot, so do any of you have any old photos or know of any “how to” plans that show a tank rack from the ‘50s or ‘60s? I want something period correct to rack my 72s at the Aquala shop. Thanks!

Heres one from my copy of the 'How To Book of Skin and Scuba Diving' Editor James Wykoff, pub. # 561, no pub. date given. I bought this book in the early 60's.....don't know the age of the photo....(kinda looks like Loyd Bridges).....and the tanks were strapped into a shelf it looks like......I've seen other photos of the tanks just laying on the deck with blocks holding them in place.....including one which I intended to build but never did.....24" length of plastic 2" tubings with a nylon rope stringing each together. For use in the back of my truck, trunk or what ever vehicle I had......but time gets away and I didn't.........here is the photo. scan0004 by Michael Story, on Flickr

Here is how it was done on our U.S. Navy vessel that took us out four our deep-water qualifying dives off Key West, Florida in 1967. Note that all the twin 90 cubic foot tanks were stored horizontally. Also, if my count is correct, 40 twin scuba units could be accommodated in this storage area. These tanks all had very round bottoms too. Here's a closer view of the same photo. And, here's an underwater photo of one of your Pararescue trainees exiting after the dive. My local dive shop, Pacific Watersports, has a similar tank storage, but compartmentalized for only single tanks (either AL 80s or steel 72s). Again, they store these tanks horizontally. John

Charlie, if you remember the milkman, you are vintage. When I was a kid my dad would make some comment about wondering what side of the family my hair color came from and mom would always say "Yea, it's the same color as our milkman's hair..." She thought that was hilarious. M

She thought that was hilarious. M My Dad thought he was a very funny guy. I was the middle boy out of 3. He'd always introduce us as: This is Michael, my oldest; this is David, my youngest, and THIS is Alf, the garbageman's little boy. What wit, eh? I came through it ok, though........tic, wince, shudder, tic.

Thanks guys, I didn’t realize there were this many replies. So it looks like horizontal racks were the way it was done back then. In the photo that Mossback made, you can see what looks like individual slots/cubicles for singles. I have a good idea of what I need to make now.
