I have a 1959 USD J valve that whistles in the non-reserve position. If I pull the reserve, it stops. Any solution other than a rebuild, and if a rebuild is necessary, is there a thread here to walk me through? I’ve looked, but can’t find one.

Rebuilds are pretty easy. VDH has the repair diagram in the Manuals and Catalogs section under US Diver repair manuals. M

Ty, just try it! Just to be safe, take lots of pictures and make notes as you go. For me anyway, it's kinda relaxing to that sort of thing. You should have something like the Ramones playing too, just so you don't get stressed out

Ty, is it a whistle, or a shrill-squeal? I ask because the Dacor Darts would squeal, horribly. I'm wondering if something is loose and acting like a reed?

If you have air escaping from your J-valve it's time for a tear-down and look see. Just my 2psi. M

There’s no air escaping, it just makes a whistling/whine/squealing sound upon inhalation. If you pull the reserve, the sound stops.

There’s no air escaping, it just makes a whistling/whine/squealing sound upon inhalation. If you pull the reserve, the sound stops. This isolates the corrosion to the bypass area of the valve. It may stop if you put it into the non-reserve position, then soak it in 10% white vinigar without needing to break it down. Is the J-reserve functioning correctly? John

John I’m not sure if it’s functioning correctly, since I haven’t breathed the tank down low enough. It feels solid and smooth though, and makes a soft “click” when pulled down. I’ll try the vinegar trick tomorrow.

There’s no air escaping, it just makes a whistling/whine/squealing sound upon inhalation. If you pull the reserve, the sound stops. Sounds like (no pun intended) that you either have a bad seat on the reserve assembly (the thingy with the notch in it and the spring on it) or the volcano orifice the same seat presses on when the reserve lever is up has verdigris, corrosion, pitting, etc... I had the same issue one time. The seat looked fine but the volcano orifice down inside the reserve side was corroded. I took the eraser end of a pencil dipped in CLR and worked it over the orifice to clean it. Did the trick and the whistling stopped. I did the same thing for a friend's J-valve but the volcano orifice was too pitted and the J-valve deemed officially FUBAR. Good luck. M

Ty,
Did the soaking work?
