Hi Every one
Its a rainy day here in Alberta so I made it a TV watching day and to my surprise there was a movie called The underwater city on. I never even heard of this movie it had plenty of double hose regulators and it was a bit funny watching guys acting like they were underwater in suits. The flick was rather grainy but made for a few good laughs. I was wondering what every ones favourite underwater film was and why.

Mine is Cousteau's "World Without Sun," which came out in the early-1960s. I saw it in a theater in New York City in 1963. It was awe-inspiring on the big screen. I also saw "The Silent World" on the big screen when it came to town in Salem, Oregon in 1958 or 1959. The theater had a manikin in a full deep sea diving suit just outside the theater when "The Silent World" ran. Both films amazed me, and led me to diving.
My favorite Hollywood film is also "Thunderball," as I knew some of the jumpers in the jump scenes at the end.

I pretty much agree with Thunderball. The wet sub from the film is here at the dive shop. We are going to get it operational hopefully next summer. Now THAT is something I can fix. I'll let Dan and Bryan fix my regulators!!

I liked the ABYSS... even though the water alien and the never in a billion years no deco accent from 1800 ft after months in saturation were part of the film. The sub fights and implosions were cool to watch. Ed Harris did a good job of making the liquid breathing suit look real enough. I understand the rat really did breath the oxygenated flourocarbon.

I guess I have to agree with the majority, Thunderball is my favorite movie of all. I personally like the big underwater fight scene at the end. I think that is what really got me into the vintage diving. As for TV shows it has to be Seahunt. To this day I still watch my favorite episodes of good old Mike Nelson over and over.

I like "Creature from the Black Lagoon", especially since my ex was (and still is) terrified of the "gill man". It had some great early fresh water diving shots. For TV, it was Sea Hunt, followed by Cousteau's National Geographic specials, like the Conshelf experiments in the Red Sea.

I just watched James Bond (Sean Connery) in "Never say never again." It had some very good underwater action footage in it, and some really nice wet submarines.

Hi All
I must say I agree with cstmwrks and the Abyss...Would also like to say though, for a fairly modern film it does look dated now. As for the 'Alien' thing, they obviously did some research. If you get a chance look at page 129 in 'Diving To Adventure' by Hanns Hass, there is a picture and reference to something very similar. This is a copy of what is written. 'A living being? When I touched it with my finger, the finger passed through without resistance.' It looks just like the film without the pretty faces. Regarding the rat, I've been told that humans (Military) many years ago have used this method also...How true I dont know but it wouldn't surprise me after seeing that picture.

I was always partial to "UNDERWATER" with Jane Russell, Gilbert Roland, 1953. Several reasons why I liked the film, Jane's red suit and of course two hose, state of the art, diving gear! Two years later I got the aqua-lung......still looking for that red suit gal! diverdown1955

Jerry, that sounds very cool. I wonder if it was even released on video... Not all of them are! I'll have to look it up. I bet it's the oldest one mentioned so far. Here's the link to it in the IMDB: www.imdb.com/title/tt0048764/Now I need to find it for sale... it sounds like a great feature film for the 3rd annual vintage dive assembly. ;D
