I’m glad I got one decent selfie while diving it! The other dozen I took turned out terribly blurry

The OEM exhaust diaphragms often leak into the box. That's why they are smeared with black gunk around the rim. Do you have a stainless steel clamp for the new rim? The wire one will not play well here.

I used the wire, but with some ShoeGoo beneath and above it. When it solidified, it made a nice seal.

I had my second dive of the year today at Cook Park on the Tualatin River. River conditions were much nicer than on the Clackamas River, with a dock to get into the water off of and shallow water. But the down side is visibility which was less than 5 feet. I used my Healthways Hybrid Scuba regulator, and I took out the duckbill completely just prior to the dive. I had noticed a large increase in the resistance on the exhale side, and felt that maybe the old duckbill I had trimmed hod stuck. Well, it had not only stuck, but had melted together. I pulled it out of the horn, put the exhalation hose back on, and decided to dive it. Here's what it looked like: IMG_1263 by John Ratliff, on Flickr My Healthways backpack has the crotch strap with its hardware on it too. This may be one of the few completely correct Healthways backpacks, as all the hardware is original. I did have a bit of a problem with it as when I bent over to put on my weight belt while on the dock, the shoulder strap, held by two snaps, unsnapped and I had to re-do it before diving. Here's what the hardware for that backpack looks like: IMG_1264 by John Ratliff, on Flickr IMG_1265 by John Ratliff, on Flickr The dive itself went pretty well. I had my float & dive flag, which I towed. I crossed the river in order to stay away from a father and his son who were fishing off the dock. I had my Canon PowerShot SD500 camera in its waterproof case, and had planned on having the GoPro filming, but its battery was dead. So I dove and went down. I was also looking for the Asian clam, which is an invasive species. I wanted to photograph this clam on the bottom, and get an idea of how numerous it is. 'Turns out it is TNTC (too numerous to count), as even looking with my SeawiscopeEY I could not see oll of them. In the photos after I came back home, I identified a number of small ones I had not actually seen while diving. Here are some of my photos. IMG_3534 by John Ratliff, on Flickr IMG_3535 by John Ratliff, on Flickr IMG_3536 by John Ratliff, on Flickr This is what the clam's shell looks like. IMG_3537 by John Ratliff, on Flickr Count all the syphons in this photo. A couple of observations about the performance of the Healthways Hybrid Scuba. First, the inhalation is wonderful. It has as Gold Label Venturi with the original boxes. Second, the duckbill being absent did not affect the performance a lot, but at times I had to roll to my left and exhale to get water out of the exhalation hose. I did not got full head-down, but in photographing the clams I was oriented somewhat head-down, and that allowed a small amount of water into the exhalation hose. I easily got rid of it. I also tried out my Aqueon, and simply again confirmed why I don't like it as a swimming device. I'll use my own scoop fins (see the photo of the area) and some of my own designs (I'm making a new model of my Sea Turtle-Dolphin swimming apparatus. But that's for another post and time. John

Very cool! Despite the poor viz you took some great pictures. Are you in contact with a dept of natural resources on what you’re seeing?

I forgot to mention two problems on my dive yesterday.
First, I forgot my dive knife, which resulted in my being stuck by a treble hook on two lures that I tried to pick up off the bottom. Without my dive knife, I tried to break the fishing line off the lures, and that caused me to be punctured twice (not badly, but it hurt a bit). ‘Gotta remember that knife, as I use it on virtually all dives.
Second, my GoPro ended up with a dead battery, as I had not charged it the night before. So rather that dive it, it and the dive helmet bremained inside my float during the dive.
On the bright side, I had a rather large small-mouth bass look me over twice. It came in close, but I couldn’t get a photo of it as it was gone by the time I grabbed my camera. I told the fisherman and his son about it though, that it did exist. However, in order to get that big it has to be hard to catch. I also gave the fisherman my two lures. Hopefully he and his son will use them more than me just displaying them in my garage.
