Hello,
I’am in the process of rebuilding a DA Navy approved, and am trying to figure out how to remove the LP seat on the horseshoe. Also what to replace it with once it’s out?
Thanks Dave

Thanks Dave Hi Dave, I responded to your same post on VDH. Pry it out with a pick. When you replace it with a new seat some folks use a drop of superglue to hold it in place, but the design of the top should hold it in place ok. Good Luck, Mark PS, VDH has new seats but they are temporarily closed. Rob at The Scuba Museum likely has them.

Dave, firstly, welcome! I've had really good luck making my own seats with a paper-punch and a sheet of neoprene. I've had the best results with a three-hole-punch, such as you'd use for a three ring binder. The single hand held ones tend to run a bit small. I think for the neoprene sheet it's 1/16", but don't hold me to it...
Good luck,
Jaybird

Thanks Dave Correct me if I'm wrong , please, but is this the one with the soft seat which is bonded or cast into a depression on the horseshoe? I think these are like the Dacor R1,2,3 seats that are cast into the brass lever and are not meant to be removed and replaced. The whole lever was replaced, I believe. I have never rebuilt a Navy Approved, but I've seen the seats/horseshoe levers. What I have done to Dacor levers is slice the rubber flush with the little cup, then bond a new seat to the old one with o-ring superglue. I can't vouch for how long this will hold up under use, but it does seem to be solid and works.

From what I can tell, Dave's lever is identical to mine and the seat simply pops out from under the crimp. My 2psi. www.vintagedoublehose.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9541

You are no doubt correct, as I know sh** about these regs. I might have seen some parts that are earlier than this. As I recall (red light spinning, klaxon going off) they were a bonded soft seat on a horseshoe lever, ala Dacor R-1. CG45?

I think I just dug the old seat out of mine. I was so frustrated with this reg, I got desperate and just used something sharp and dug, chipped and blasted the remains of the seat out. It was no longer made of rubber and had turned into a bakelite type substance. It basically broke apart. As for the replacement, if I recall...it was just the "standard" LP Seat that was used in the common 1960's until today? era US Divers LP Seat. I can't recall if I used some adhesive or not, but I had to coax it into the hole where it fit. It worked...it was a few years ago and definatlely not the easiet regulator I have ever worked on. Not saying it was difficult, but it was no Healthways SCUBA or Scuba Star...
I finally got the Navy Approved to stop leaking air, adjusting it took a lot of patience to put it lightly. I dove it two or three times so far. It is not the best breathing reg out there, but I think I need to change the diaphragm and I think it might have slipped off the demand lever? I don't know, I have two other double hose regs that are so much more user friendiy that I did not want to put more energy into this one. I might rethink this one later this Summer or I might just dive my Healthways SCUBA more? Mark

Yeah, those 2nd stage seats on the horseshoe lever are standard old US Divers seats that also fit a 2nd stage poppet. I sometimes fall into the "If it ain't broke, take it apart to find out why it's still working" mentality.

Any update on progress on your DA Navy Approved? I ordered a trim ring from The Scuba Museum (as much as I love keeping things how they were in 1957, I could never get the clips to stay put correctly). I am going to try and adjust my DA Navy Approved a bit, as the the last dive proved lacklustre performance. As much as I hear these are not the best breathers, I think I can get it better? Anyway, please keep up informed how your's is coming along. Mark 27629146_1825888844129720_5213717323696904269_o by Mark Lodge, on Flickr
