Okay, I looked this thing over, and all it does is to heat the air to the temperature of the surrounding water. It doesn't add any thermal energy. The coils act to allow the air to equilize to water temperature. In short, it's fine for water that's somewhere over the freezing point, but don't try this in Antarctica, or the frozen north. I'd say it works to about a water temperature of 40 degrees F, which is where some single hose regulators will freeze up. Also, it does nothing to prevent icing on the first stage. So if you have a piston regulator, or even a diaphragm regulator, it still needs icing protection. Some regulators have a special anti-freeze first stage where you can place silicone grease to prevent water from getting into the piston or diaphragm area. divelab.com/download/procedures-and-guidelines/ScubaRegulatorFreezing-ChillingFacts-4-9-14.pdfwww.scubadiving.com/why-scuba-diving-regulators-freezeBut rather than do all this, simply dive a double hose regulator such as an Aquamaster/RAM, Mistral, Dacor Dial-a-Breath/R-4, or Healthways SCUBA Gold Label, and don't worry about it. In the 70's, someone created the WABA (warm air breathing apparatus). It consisted of a thermos that a diver filled with hot water before the dive. That thermos contained a copper coil, plumbed to accept regulator hoses.
I still have my SCUDA (self contained underwater drinking apparatus). It's just a bota bag with a tube connected to a fitting on a mouthpiece. When you squeezed the bag, the liquid shot into the diver's mouth. Water always tasted brackish. I think scotch would have worked.
John, the American version of the Poseidon Cyklon 300 instructions included a photo of someone pouring Jack Daniels into the first stage anti-freeze cap. It was good for a warm up after the dive and much less messy than silicone.
Good Dives, Charlie
