This just showed up on my doorstep, with a few other goodies. The manual I found online claims it pumps at 3.5 cfm, and that it might have been used with a flamethrower. I have no idea it it pumps. Any interest? IMG_2213 by Charlie will, on Flickr IMG_2214 by Charlie will, on Flickr

I decided to put my flamethrower project on the back burner (heh), so I have no use for this right now. How big is it compared to a breadbox?

I'm intrigued, but sadly not in a position to spend money right now (darn it!).

Jay, That is the shaft to turn the compressor. It didn't come with a motor. I have no idea what to ask for it. I can't guarantee it still comes up to pressure, or that all the parts are there. I see a similar machine on Ebay for $1950. Here's a short video of it turning over. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvNdt3nMxG8

Hi Charlie, I think I may have the same compressor on my Tornado/Kidde. The two cylinders that slant downward are the unique giveaway to what it is. If you have a 4th stage pointing straight down, its the same as mine. This is the first version of the 4 stage. It was quickly followed my a 4 stage with straight out (not slanted) side cylinders. I'm told that both versions have alot of compatible parts. I bought mine from a local firestation for $200. It is a complete fill station with motor, condensation, and filtration, and fill whip. The main issue at first was wiring the motor... The switch had been torn apart and I'm no electrician. Next was replacing the filter and condensation systems. I pumped tanks for awhile this way. Then, I over filled the oil and damaged the seal on the fan end of the shaft. Jim Shelden had a replacement which I managed to install after damaging and marring the edge in my efforts to get the old seal out. BTW - I think the specs say 4 CFM at 3700 rpm. Mine was running a 3400 rpm motor and I think I was getting a true 3.5 cfm fill rate from 0 psi to full. Okay so I filled tanks for almost a whole summer and then developed a leak somewhere. At this point I had my RIX SA3 and my Coltri MCH-6 that worked fine and I was tired of fixing the Kidde. So, I set it aside and haven't messed with it for almost 2 years now. Who knows, the problem might be simple. It's hard to say what these things are worth. I think the 4 stage (like you have) is the most desirable and rare. But there's a lot of expense that it will require to turn it into a complete system. It looks like it's missing the oil reservoir for one thing. Then it will need a motor, moisture separator, and filter system. Then of course a fill whip. Buying used and fixing up is fine as long as you're enjoying the learning and fixing process. On the other hand, I am seeing MaxAir 35 and Coltri MCH-6 brand new units on sale for $2500... No muss no fuss. That guy advertising the Kidde for $1900 has had it for sale for over a year with no takers. Your unit looks in really nice shape and somebody desiring a Kidde might jump at the right price! Below is what my Kidde 4 stage looked like whan I got it from the Firestation: Below is what my fill station looked like after fixing it all up:

SL, I've got the oil reservoir along with other assorted pieces. I just don't need another project right now.
Good Dives, Charlie

SL, I've got the oil reservoir along with other assorted pieces.... Jim Shelden said these Kidde 4-Stage compressors are tough and reliable. He had 2 of them set up to keep his dive shop cascade tanks filled... They ran and ran for years. Value... Jim said these are still in production but new ones cost about $16,000 and are mainly purchased by the government. Also, there is a place that sells replacement parts if you need them.
