Thanks for the votes of confidence, gents! However, save the gratitude until and unless I succeed, lol. I tend to get into these things in phases.... so no promises on timeliness, but I'll do my best. Sorry Bill, family comes first! Of course, I spend enough time talking to you all here that your starting to feel like a second family... so there goes prioritizing! lol Best, James Since I have 1000% confidence in James' abilities I'm putting in my order for a James-created Trieste diaphragm now! That, combined with my BTAV2dS (BT Adjustable Venturi Second Stage) will make one awesome DH reg!

.... I don't trust that the Trieste reproduction diaphragms seat correctly. ....[ Trieste diaphragms] are very difficult to seal (see posts here about that issue). The diaphragms are slightly too small in diameter. When trying to install, you have to get everything perfect and clamp it in place, or the diaphragm will slip off the flange. My concern is that they could pull out in use and cause the regulator to flood. Not good unless you have a safe second.
I was making diaphragm measurements for James' project, and noticed that the original Voit diaphragm (which I haven't used in 11-12 years) is also a bit too small in diameter to properly fit into the recesses in the cans. And yes, that makes assembly more difficult. So it's not really a problem that began with the later aftermarket silicone ones! The aftermarkets were likely just made with the exact dimensions taken off an original which never did fit right from the start (unless the rubber ones shrunk some with age).
In fact, while I'm busting Voit engineers I might as well add that they were also missing the mark with the spring tension in second stage and the poorly designed venturi jets. The combination of #1) poor shape design of diaphragm, #2) Too much 2nd stage spring tension (at least in mine), and #3) too much air volume directed into the cans by the poor "venturi" balancing orifices, resulted in a not-so-great performer.
#1 was corrected with revised diaphragm shape which is activated by considerably less effort and which fits the recesses in the cans. #2 was corrected by the revised diaphragm height increase which allows the 2nd stage to be backed out 1 to 2 turns, lessening the spring tension. #3 was corrected by making the inward facing air orifice adjustable, lessening the air flow into the cans to reduce unnecessary inflation of the diaphragm.
Voit just gave up too soon on what could have been a much more appealing regulator.

They made a I and a II. Does anyone know what was different about them besides the labels?

They made a I and a II. Does anyone know what was different about them besides the labels? My understanding is that Trieste (Black Label) and Trieste II (Blue Label) had identical internals but the Trieste came with an hour-glass mouthpiece and the Trieste II came with a curved mouthpiece. I remember a friend of my dad all pissed off one day after buying a new II to replace his original Trieste and yelling out something to the effect of, "It's the same f'ng regulator!" and then storming off to the local dive shop to give them his what not.

That's what I thought.

I have been looking for a nice blue label Trieste II for my collection for quite a while now. Most of the ones I've seen have trashed cans and labels. I shall continue my quest... M

I have a II that is in nice shape, but the label has no paint. I guess they can be repainted, but I'm no painter.

If it helps, Simonbeans has replacement labels for the Trieste and Trieste II.

I've modeled what I think it should look like (2 designs, both shown to Bill and received his blessing as possibilities). Mold is printed, and first attempt is poured (using a plastic friction plate).... in an hour or so I should be able to pull it from the mold. I'll let you all know how it looks... and if it looks good, then the next step is sending to the designated guinea pig (Bill T) for fit checks and testing. Best, James

Out of the mold, still has to finish curing.... but version one first try looks ok to me. Fits on Bills mold, so it should fit a Trieste. My main concern is that it may be too thin.... but it ought to be stupid responsive. Once it cures, I'll re-verify that it fits on the mold Bill loaned me... and if so then it will go in the mail hopefully tomorrow.

Looks nice, and I appreciate your interest and efforts! Can't wait to try it out! I think there are going to be some Trieste owners knocking on your door. What is the diameter of the plate?

Nice work my friend! The Scubamaster used a super thin diaphragm, and made it crazy-responsive; I call them blue-tortillas, you can see one in the bottom of the image: In my opinion, since this is such a demure reg, you can get away with it being thin, but if it was something like a Scuba, quite large, it would be cause for concern I gave John a blue-tortilla for his Scuba Star, and I put them in all of mine: both he and I were positively giddy at the results JB

Put me on the list for several! I am really excited about a diaphragm that will fit!
