Is there any simple test to determine if a material is black silicone versus neoprene rubber?

If you've got it in your hand and you have a great sense of smell you can detect that neoprene has a slight odor and silicone has none. Additionally I find that when wet, neoprene has a slight resistance to slipping under your finger tip when rubbed and silicone is slick. You might also notice that if a light oil is applied to neoprene it will spread out in to a nice film. On silicone it will bead up like rain water on a waxed car hood.

Well, there's a great test--you simply dive it for about seven to ten years straight, and see if it starts melting off your face.
Enjoy,
John
PS--Silicone is usually a bit more shiny, and more pliable, than neoprene.

Thanks for the ideas. Please keep them coming if there any more. I have run into a mask which I think should have a neoprene skirt, but it is shiny and flexible like silicone as John mentioned.

I love my twin 38s, but I use these for longer bottom times, and I have a SPG hooked up to the HP port for double-hosing. They are compact, but not ideal weight-wise. They weigh 56 pounds full and dry and I have to use 4 pounds more weight with them than with my 72s, making for a heavy haul when hiking to the dive site. They are also about 4 pounds buoyant when at reserve pressure. I still love them though! I don't get a spanking from them in the surf like I do from a 72

If it's an OceanWays or OceanReef mask it may very well be silicone. Does it look kind'a like this?

Thanks seakrakken. No, the one particular mask I have which I can't tell whether is neoprene rubber or silicone is the U.S.Divers "equi-purge". It is oval with bellowed finger pockets and no purge (interestingly enough!). But I also have some other items which I wasn't sure of. Thanks again for the tips.
