The tanks were just dropped off for hydro. The tech had a better light than I did — what I thought was rust was a sort of brown coating on the inside of the two Scubapro tanks. They actually looked fairly clean. The 72 was almost a bright white inside. They should be back from hydro around Monday so I will take them to be VIP'ed then. Here's hoping the coatings aren't anything odd.

Hi Jacob! Some old tanks have a plastic coating on the insides of them: my HW tank has such a coating.

Because steel tanks expand and contract when filled, those coatings can develop cracks. If moisture gets in, pitting can happen under the coating. I used to remove those coatings by tumbling with paint stripper. See my previous comment about things I don't like to do. A careful inspection by trained visual inspector can determine if tanks are sound. Good Dives, Charlie

It's official — for the first time in fifty years the tanks are in current hydro. Tomorrow they'll be dropped off for a visual, then it will be time to re-do the valves. One of the 95s will be getting a Pro K valve for my dive buddy while the other two will be getting their original valves serviced (after I figure that out). Jacob

Thanks again for all of your help everyone, I just picked up the tanks from VIP. The coatings were not an issue. One has a new Pro K valve on it for my father and the others are moving into the valve rebuild stage.
The shop owner remembered selling a guy some 72s a while back and dug up his number and called him while I was there. I’m swinging by next week to pick up one with a current hydro, vip, and air fill.

Jacob, that's why we're here: we are passing the torch to you, one day you will be in the same place too It's always fun when you can meet someone who bought the gear new: it really makes you feel a link with the past... JB
