Off on a 3-day end-of-season lobster trip in a week. Since I'll be diving deep, shallow and everywhere in between and alone 5 or 6 hours a day/night my wife politely reminded me that I'm old and she asked if I could carry a back-up air source. After dismissing the idea outright I got to thinking about it and went out to the garage to dig through my bin-o-parts. Found a 6 cu. ft. Pony tank that I was given at a DEMA show back in 1992. Passed hydro yesterday. Had an old K-valve that I also overhauled. Had a Voit MRII 1st stage laying around and a red hose so I overhauled those. Had a Voit Titan II 2nd stage left over from when I built my Titan DH conversion out of a Titan 1st stage so I used that. Put a right-angle adapter on the LP port to keep the hose manageable. Here is the result. My wife called it "cute." Hmmmm....

It is cute, and you're not old (I am). John

Better to have and not need than to otherwise need, right? It really is quite cute. A related question I've been thinking about ever since I got my dad one for Christmas — does anyone carry a second bottle with them when they are diving with a horse collar or even sans BC entirely? It seems like something that works a little easier with a wing.

But you can put D-rings on even just a tank harness to sling a pony. I do when buddy diving with a single stage, just so the buddy has access to an "Alternate".

Note my ingenious quick release for the 2nd stage if I need it. Yeah, I know I need to clip off the excess material on the hose clamps. I'm set up for lobster diving baby! With a horsecollar BC I used a 15 cu. ft. pony bracketed to my tank when we were doing all the deep exploratory dives in Truk Lagoon back in the late 70's, early 80's. Not sure if this is one of the ones I used back then but it is an old 15 cu. ft. one I had laying around. I stood it up next to the 6 cu ft for size comparison here. I've never used a pony without a BC of some type. My vintage dives are all pretty much less than 60 feet with my back-up air source 60' or less straight up. No reason why you couldn't dive with a pony without a BC but then it really isn't a vintage dive is it?

That makes sense, thank you both! I'll have to try my dad's mount on my tank with my horse collar. It's just so much easier for him to lug it around on top of his 60 pound tank.
I'd love to hear more about those Truk dives in the 70s and 80s.
