Forgive me if this has already been covered in a previous post (I searched but couldn't find any info). I own a 50 Fathom reg with the blue-painted brass case and am interesed in giving it a new paint job. I'd like to know if anyone else has successfully matched the original color, and if so, where I might be able to obtain the finish? I already showed the reg to an automotive paint & supply distributor, as well as several auto body/paint shops. Their answers varied from "highly unlikely it can be matched" to "too small a job to justify the cost of matching the finish." Another suggested I seek out a classic car shop that specializes in matching 1950's-vintage metallic finishes, but again doubted that the practical benefits would outweigh the costs involved. This is obviously not my area of expertise, so any help would be much appreciated.

Hi
Tyr some one who paints choppers, they tend to pay more attention to paint detailing and creating original paint color.

I have done quite a bit of painting though not of regulators. Most any finsih can be reproduced. Different lines of paint and different paints ithin a product line can have different dyes. No matter if it is a car, a motorcycle or a regualtor, if your doing a total repaint no body will notice the hue is not exact unless a new and unpainted one is set beside it for comparison. I might suggest a powder coat but I am not sure if there are metal flake types available yet in powder coat products. When it comes to metal flakes it takes huge skill, flash time, thinner ratios, type of flake product, viscosity and on and on affect the final look. I painted my Bultaco dirt bike, red over silver metallic and then clear coated. I used a modern base coat and clear coat process. I have had this bike since new, a 1971 125cc Pursang. I am not completed yet but the finish is not exactly original but nobody will ever know, heck, after a few rides in 71 the finish was not original!! An exact match usually is not needed. James

Hi Scotty Just a suggestion, but if you went to the Guys that do the Automotive Exotic Pictures on the sides of Vans with the Air Brushes, then they could probably get a near perfect match for the Least amount of money for you, since they would not be useing a large Paint Sprayer and ther change colors fast too, it might not be expensive at all. Then maybe a good Clear Coat to protect it. If it worked then you would also know you could re-do it whenever you would like too,to always keep it looking great. William.
