Just when I was getting over the trials and frustrations of my previous two conversions, and thinking "never again", this box showed up.... and I just can't resist putting together a third one. Darn that guy that sent me this gob of goodies. You all know him. Each of my previous conversions differed from each other in their configuration, and actually I have been daydreaming about what I could do with yet another version. This one is also of WW2 vintage (1944), and will be a much simpler config without a separate 1st stage, using the original built in 1st stage system with very minimal modification. I want to keep it more like the 40's and 50's conversions, but it needs to be safer and better than the 1953 Popular Science death-trap. Doesn't look like much yet, but it will soon.

Bill, it's in your blood, stop resisting! I have a weakness for a certain brand of PC from your state: Compaq computers was based in Texas!
I'm very much looking forward to hearing what you're going to do: that last one you did was super cute. So, let me guess, this one came from the other side of the Bay where I live, eh?

Huh. Would you look at that! This one has a separate ring that the diaphragm attaches to, making it easier to access the internals. On the ones w/o the ring, you have to untie the diaphragm to get inside. The ring is, well...., the ring you see in the foreground of the photo.
Swell looking diaphragm you got there, Bill!

Bendix diving lung #3 is shaping up. The inhalation configuration is working well with some adjustments (and removal of some unneeded components) to the original internal first stage. There is still room for final adjustments if the test dive doesn't satisfy me. I haven't begun actual configuration of the exhaling side, but will likely be similar to my other two Bendix conversions. Initial inhalation effort is very low, and sustained effort at normal breathing rate is very nice for this type of device. However, due to the way the internal first stage works, the breathing effort will increase noticeably with depth, so this will never be a deep diving device. I would be pleased if it's comfortable at 25-30'with slow and easy swimming. I couldn't get this 9 second video to show up here, but if you click link you should see the breathing test on the bench.

Bill, just curious, have you ever thought about making a scuba-reg with a propane regulator? The Northill Air Mite always makes me think of them...
