Well I hope you are all happy all this talk about steel 72's made me do an impluse buy. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7220141881&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fcgiurl%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fcgi.ebay.com%252Fws%252F%26fkr%3D1%26from%3DR8%26satitle%3D7220141881%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1I do have a question I have anthor steel 72 just like this one it's a USD from 5/65 but Icannot find any brust discs and my LDS says they dont make that big anymore it's pretty big almost the size of a dime the nut does have a 6 way blow out and it is marked USD 3360 PSI P any help would be great I would like to get this in hydro and vip. I think I am going to have to change out the nut and disc on this new one also so anyhelp finding one for this would be great too. Thanks Ed PS I side note about dive shop monkeys I do have a steel 72 Healthways from 5/66 and it HAD a cherry sticker on it just think from 1966 till last year the tank had been used all those years I told the guy to make sure the stcker was facing out when he put the valve back on, well guess what I had to a quick underwater repair and never thought about the sticker and my weight belt tore it up yes my fault but also dive monkey fault so I tell from now on if you cant get it right I go someplace else. PS What do you think of my new toy:)

Go to a different dive store. They still make them and they are available. Bet they wanted you to buy a "NEW AL 80" huh? I have heard so much BS about the 72's. They are still one of the best tanks ever made. We use them everyday in both class and rental usage. Bust disks are available, don't let them give you that crap!!!! Allan

Thanks thats what I thought too, I do think I will need a new nut for the burst disc if you look at the ebay tank you will see if it blows it goes straight out I think they all have to make a 90 deg turn or something so it does not rocket out. You were right they did want me to buy a new tank but I said I will find someone to get this old one going I also hate when they give you the line diveing with that old stuff is gonna kill you. So I asked them to show me some proof of all the diver related deaths due to the USD's doublehose regs failing and I get the blank stare. I see you are in NY I live in center part of NJ maybe we can dive some time. Ed

One of my sets of doubles, twin 45's have that big disc screw with the center exit......I think it was designed that way........my tended to loosen up occasionally and let air seep away.......a bit of teflon tape stopped that.....just a heads up........

PS What do you think of my new toy:) Nice win there, Ed. Backpack, J valve rod and all! A 3/4" valve gives NO CHOICE as to orientation at installation. Only option there would be to get a bunch of valves and try them for the desired result. I suspect your 72 was a 1/2" tapered thread hummer, though. These give a little leeway, but once the valve is snug you may not be able to get another, say, 3/4 turn to line up a sticker the way you'd like. It may have been oriented the way you saw it before, but be aware that each time a taper threaded valve is tightened you will extrude those threads a little more and the valve will seat a little deeper each time. That's probably why the valve ended up in a different position after they reinstalled it. 1/2" valves don't last forever because of this and many are sold on ebay which will not seal even when threaded down to the shoulder. ...you will see if it blows it goes straight out I think they all have to make a 90 deg turn or something so it does not rocket out. They don't HAVE to make that 90 degree turn as far as I know, but my LDS owner insists on it because he doesn't want one to blow brass into his hand, eye, or anywhere. Besides, once those old slotted plugs corrode, they are a real b***h to get out.

Thanks I think I might have paid too much, but it's a nice looking tank he also has the nice reg for sale I am sure at one time the two were together maybe I will throw a bid in : ) I love the old 72's being only 5'9" 150 lbs I can move around a bit more plus it should look good with my vintage suit and ols Aqua- Master The one thing I love is I do underwater pool repair and some other stuff and one thing it has taught me is how to fine tune my buoyancy .
