Hi Does any one have or has any one heard any update news of the fate of the Calypso, the last I heard she was still rotting away in some European ship yard and was scheduled to be restored in the Bahamas and turned into a dock side museum to commemorate the work of Cousteau. Ron

I spoke to the Cousteau Society during my visit and they indicated that there was one more appeal in the custody battle. The original case ruled in favor of the Cousteau Society but there was an appeal. The apparently have removed some additional hardware in order to make it float higher in the water and they maintain that the funding is still in place and they will proceed with the renovation once this last court decision has been made. That was as of two weeks ago, but who really knows. -Ryan

This is sad about the Calypso. But I followed the links, and there was a separate link that commerated the life of Cousteau. It has original 35mm film footage of Cousteau and Dumas using the first version of the Aqualung in the 1940s. Take a look. I think you'll enjoy this: www.ina.fr/actualite/dossiers/2004/Juin2004.fr.htmlIt's all in French, but it is the original motion pictures that were shot, and those shots were used in the very old photos (black and white) in The Silent World book. Enjoy, John

By the way there is recent French Film about current fate of the Calypso and the different schemes to restore, it shows it in current state and contains interviews w/ Falco and other old crew members. The version I saw was converted to US TV format but I didnt get a copy. I believe it was on the French equivilant of PBS.

I think they should sink it for an artificial reef. Put it about 10 miles out of Destin, about right. What better and more fitting end. Died with her boots on. Nemrod
