A few days ago I saw a show called "Navy SEALs Training, BUD/s Class 234- The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday" on the Discovery Channel which documented phase two -pool training- in this episode.
Very interesting. If you haven't seen it and get a chance to catch it next time around, take a look. I think all O/W classes should be like this.
I was really surprised to see their dive gear. Double hose regulators, horsecollars, and double tank harnesses.
The double hose regulators looked familiar, but I couldn't find a match in any of my archived pictures:
a) Shiny chrome.
b) Bottom box stood out more than USD Aqua-Lungs
c) Bottom box tapered in to a smaller center (similar to a Roayal Mistral) where the ID plate/label would be, but they had ID numbers painted on.
d) Exhaust ports were around the tapered sides of the bottom box, but were not simple holes. Imagine two slots cut in a sheet of metal, then the center pushed in to create a trough with openings to the other side at each end. This is how the exhaust ports were formed around the sides.
e) I think the top box had reinforcing ribs embossed like a La Spirotechnique Mistral.
Does anyone know this regulator?
The mouthpieces and hoses were also interesting. The black plastic mouthpiece looked like it was manufactured to the same pattern as the Draeger re-breather mouthpieces shown later in the show. Maybe they were the same, but the Draeger mouthpieces had tabs on the front to secure a neck strap to. The connectors at the mouthpiece ends had fairly large black plastic nuts with wrench flats around the circumference.
Does anyone know what mouthpiece the SEALs are using?
The hose was flexible enough for the instructors to tie knots in while the students were using them underwater. I assume they were 1" at both ends, but I was unable to really see where the hoses ended and the mouthpiece began.
Does anyone know these hoses?
If these hoses and mouthpieces are availible to the public, they may come in handy in a pinch should reproduction hoses become scarce again sometime in the future. Any ideas for a source?
Also notable was the fact that they were wearing the regs so darned high. No doubt the instructors were trying to make things just a little more difficult for the students. You'd think one of the students on the show by the last name of 'Haas' could have straightened them out on this!
If will post a heads-up here if I see this episode coming back on the air.
