Hi, Mike - Dan and I were out of town all last week and I was just checking in. Sorry for the late response. You know how often Dan shows up here.... But I will kick him in the behind again and see if that helps. He told me all about it, but you know how I am, not being a diver... I remember him saying something about "free beer" one night and that's all I remember. You know how in life, we take what we need, and leave the rest. ;D I have one other memory - I think Dan said Dale was there, too! Or did I make that up? No, I think Dale was there, from Santa Rosa, CA. Maybe he will check in as well. Linda

Mike, I was there and as usual it was great. Friday night was reception at Global Diving & Salvage, a commercial diving company in Seattle. Very good hosts and their office is a museum. Cool old helmets on every desk! And this is where we got the free beer. Was a good time, hanging out and shooting bull with fellow HDSers. Saturday the conf. started at the hotel Nexus. First speaker was Robert Martin, he gave an informative talk on modified dive helmets of the North West. Next was Bill High of PSI Cylinder inspection fame. His talk was about diving in the North West and he was promoting his new book. Another speaker was Pete Pehl who is a retired Navy Diver who was diving officer on submarines. Very interesting talk about sub diving ops. Phil Nuyton was supposed to be there, but got called away at the last minute. His daughter showed up and gave a talk on the first dive computors Phil had written. Informative but poorly delivered speech, although I can't blame her, Dad probably said at the last minute " here, go read this". There was a presentation by Brad Matsen about the first deep submersible dives in the 1930's, he was also promoting a book. And there was a film about the salvage of the Diamond Knot, a Salmon canning boat sunk in the North West. There was some cool gear on display. Dan brought a nice pile of cool stuff to show off. The Banquet that night was again supposed to have Phil Nuyton speaking, but Leslie Leaney gave a very good presentation on some of his travels looking for antique gear. He stayed in Cousteau's house and actually found remnants of the original Aqua Lung. There was an auction at the Banquet. An old Seibe Gorman helmet, some rare books and a few other items were sold. I left the room for a second and my wife bid on & won a Wyland sculpture. We bought one more at the same price and broke them both on the travel home. She swares I did it! Sunday was a tour of Divers Institute of Technology, a very well known commercial diving school in Seattle. Great place. Here is where they trained Cuba Gooding for the movie "Men of Honor". Dives in a Mark V helmet were being offered and since not to many folk were volunteering, I jumped in since I hadn't done a Mark V yet. I've done other helmets that are better to dive than the Mark V, but it is a piece of diving history and I had to try it. Hope this short summary helps, Mike. These conferences are always good. Next year will be in Tarpon Springs, FL so make plans to be there!

dale, i really appreciate your summary of the event. i just joined the hds about a year ago so i was curious about these annual seminars. if you are into history then i believe the hds is a great way to learn alot about the sport of scuba diving, AND helmet diving. i have some of the back issues of the magizine and there are and were some great articles written about scuba. i am planning on attending the hds conference next year in tarpon. thanks again for your post dale, mike
