On Thursday night I was elected to serve as Vice President of the dive club I belong to, the North Shore Frogmen. The North Shore Frogmen is one of the oldest continuously operating dive clubs in the U.S. The club was incorporated in 1958.

Well, I’ve been here in Hong Kong since December 3rd, checking in here via Hyatt Hotel WiFi. We have been visiting relatives of Chris’ and her Mom in China. She is now 93 years old, and in a very nice care facility there. So it’s been a fascinating time. I also brought my tripod, a very nice, mobile one which I hadn’t used until yesterday. I set it up in the window of our hotel room, and took took a trail photo. I had set it up on a very small lens opening (F-16) in hopes of getting a time-lapse photo with the autos on the freeway painting with light. That trial told me that I needed to turn out all the lights in the room, so I waited until Chris went to bed, got all the lights turned off, and began taking timed photos. Below is one of the results: _MG_4173 by John Ratliff, on Flickr I wanted to use the tripod, and was able to again today when I talked with my 9-year old great-niece (if that’s what my brother-in-law’s son’s daughter is called). I had her assemble the tripod, then we put the camera on it, and we changed lenses from the 17-55mm lens to a straight 50mm standard lens with two close-up lenses screwed in. I showed her how these lenses functioned, then she used the remote to trigger an exposure of a fake plant at the restaurant we were awaiting to open. We then took the lenses off, and she took several photos of her grandmother, father and granddad. I think that it was worth it bringing that tripod so she could use the camera. I’ve been taking a lot photos, but unrelated to diving. John

John, if the cars weren't on the wrong side of the road, this could almost be the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley): it's those big green signs that are confusing me, "OK, 580 North, get off at San Pablo Bay..."

Before he came here, Phil's drug of choice was old saxophones, so I thought I'd share this: I found this vid hoping to find out what a Couesnophonent AKA Goofus, sounds like, but alas... no joy... JB

While it didn't make me smile, it did fascinate the heck outta me: John's posting bellow made me think of it! John Singer Sargent's work is so inspiring, and truly one of best painters ever Probably his most beloved:
Jaybird "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" 1885—86

I like the “Computer Diving” cartoon! It fits with how some divers are rigged today.

PS, Linda, your snow on the site is what’s happening outside my kitchen window right now.

This made me do anything but smile, actually, it's pretty depressing, yet fascinating:
Evidently, flying insects aren't attracted to the lights at night: they are attempting to fly straight, but something instinctual is forcing them to orient their backs to the light. In other words, the sun can only be in one position in the sky: it is impossible for the insect to get a different angle, but they can fly around an artificial light source.
