I have been looking at some very old color negatives from a dive I made on May 24th, 1984. I never did get these negatives enlarged or printed, and the closest I came was getting a contact sheet made. They were made with my Nikonos II underwater camera, and the Subsea 150 strobe. I also was using the 35mm lens, with a macro extension tube, shown below: 2CA49761-B566-4854-B709-E5D90FF8F656 by John Ratliff, on Flickr Here's one of those 20+ photos I scanned last week: North Umpqua Life015 by John Ratliff, on Flickr I've got this photo on my Facebook page right now, with this discussion: Enjoy, John

Hello, Diving sunday. Happy day, even it's raining. I received a dusty cyclone from a retired doctor from the medical centre where my wife work, he stopped diving already few years ago. It is my first dive with a cyclone all bubbles on the left side, I think before the diving, that I received all the bubbles more in front of my eyes. But finally it was just my left ear who get the bubble. Enjoy the little video just for your eyes. Next time I hope dive my dacor Olympic 400, for a more vintage diving youtu.be/1CbNhGjyqp8?si=gsO85BB8uUAdgpkgFred

John, very cool: those colors are beautiful. If you find out, let us know--really! I don't believe it's a dragonfly, as the abdomen is too long, at least on the ones I've seen. Fred, you need a Healthways, they push the bubbles way back: From your last email, I see Phil sent you a Sportsways, that should send the bubbles further back too JB

Maybe you will someday.

My wife and I picked up an old KitchenAide K45 mixer this weekend: it's a light industrial model made from 1962-74. One of the things that it needed was foot-pads. I looked on eBait, and they're all natural rubber, which means that after time, they degrade. I got out my old Stanley adjustable carpenter's square, set it to 5/8" and cut off five pieces from some old LP-hose, then wrapped some electrical tape around them so they'd be 1/2"-O.D.--perfect! These sure as heck ain't gunna die in my lifetime JB

I'd heard about it for years, but always assumed it was a myth.

JB,
The one about the beards was interesting to me, as years and years ago, when my older son was just a few years old, I grew a beard. Then, Chris and I needed to travel to Hong Kong to visit Chris' parents, and show them Brian, our oldest son (Nathan had not yet come along). Well, Chris' Mom told her in no uncentain terms that my beard must come off before the trip. So I shaved it off, in sections (and got some photos too). But when it as completely off, my Son Brian would not look at me. It took some time for him to get used to this weird face with the voice of his Dad.
Now, about the video "Can a little Oil Really Calm the Ocean," that's a really great discussion of the physics involved in wave formation, and shows how oil can actually work to calm the ocean.
Thanks for both these videos.
John

Well, fortunately my wife doesn't care how if I have facial hair or not, "It's your body, you do what you want with it...", I reciprocate the feeling, I'd still love no matter what she looked like As stated previously, I'd heard about the oil trick, but couldn't imagine it actually working: I mean, like, who the heck thought of doing it in the first place! Huh, I wonder if it was in ancient times while a ship was carrying oil as its freight and some got spilled into the water and they noticed the effect? Speaking of physics, the James Webb Space Telescope has been making more and more discoveries, thus proving we only have a vague idea of how the universe as a whole works: when you get down to the quantum-level everything stops making sense. For instance, we don't know what gravity really is, we can see its effect, but not what's causing it to do so. To change the subject entirely, we went for a walk last night, and on the way home we found a box of books; inside was Boy Scouts handbook from the 1950's and I immediately thought of you. You was a scout, wasn't ya? I never was, but I do like the hands-on tech, especially the old basic gear. JB
