These old West "Heroes" were thieves, robbers, pimps, hustlers, and murderers. I don't understand why they are revered.
I recently went to Missouri and stopped by Jesse James' house in St Joseph. My great grandparents lived 2 or three houses down the hill from Mr. Howard, aka Jesse James.
I went there because of the memory of an 1880s(?) photo my GM had from her parents of the street they lived on in St. Joseph showing JJ's house. My grandmother would not hear a word against Jesse, who she thought of as Robin Hood (You know, robs the rich and helps the poor), although Jesse had been killed long before her birth.
While the James boys' stories are sad, having been in the Civil War and feeling disenfranchised, their solution was to rob and kill.
Can't get behind that.

Hmmmmmm? I agree that they are not heroes, or good people, but they are interesting none the less. But then you have people like Leland Stanford, William Rodolph Hearst and Henry Ford, who people love because they robbed and murdered people "legally" while making their fortunes.
Jus' sayin'...

The 1950s movie industry is largely responsible for making some of these guys "heros." I do not like them though, as they had ethics which are diametrically opposed to mine.

John, while that is partially true, they became "folk heroes" because people like the Jame Younger gang helped out the poor while banks and "people in charge" were raking them over the coals. You may have heard about this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_Shirtwaist_Factory_fireThe owners got away with only a slap on the wrist because they could buy their freedom. Someone like Tiburcio Vásquez was popular because he could get away with "sticking it to the man": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiburcio_V%C3%A1squezAgain, I'm not saying what happened was good, only interesting, and more so, that Black Bart did what he did without killing anyone, I enjoyed the irony! JB Very true. They were horrible as well. Hearst was a murdering thug. He was responsible for the deaths of many Cornish miners.

Not that this made me smile, or happy, but I did appreciate the heck out of the idea behind it:

JB JB, The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire is one I knew something about, but reading about it again was great. Thank you! This fire actually precipitated the formation of an organization I’ve been a member of since the early 1980s, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), which is now the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP). I still am a member, some 10 years after retiring. John

I’m not sure that ejecting out of that jet was a good idea. It doesn’t look like he has a “zero-zero” ejection seat (one that will safely deliver you at zero airspeed and altitude). If I were him, I would simply have gotten out of the cockpit and ran.

I'm glad he got out. It was definately a zero/zero ejection seat. If he had not gotten out when he did, he probably would have been badly burned. John
