Happy belated birthday Phil, and many thanks! I actually quite like single hose regulators, partly for many of the reasons you express. For whatever reason, I'm quite drawn to piston regulators — this might just be due to the fact that an idiot can rebuild them and O-rings are always going to be available. Lately I've found myself wanting a Scubapro Mk 2 or 3 to play with, even though I have a Mk V I need to get around to working on. As an aside, I got new O-rings on my Sea-Vue's spool today — no more leak! Just need a new seat for the Aquarius and it should(!) be good to go. Jacob Back in the day, we used to buy generic unbalanced piston HP seats. They aren't specifically from US Divers, but may fit. I've got a drawer full of them. Due to the current state of the industry, I can't use them. If you send me your address, I'll mail you a few (dozen?). Good Dives, Charlie I bought a "kit" for my Aquarius from VDH prior to Bryans passing. The HP seat is .15". Charlie do you know by chance if these seats will fit Sportsways piston regs?

Having an Aquarius is great, but I still think you should keep an eye out for a Deep Star (not the Deep Star II). I just love the name and the look of the second stage over the look of the later 70's era second stages. Just my opinion. Mark

Things were pretty generic back then, so it's a definite maybe. I'm happy to throw a few in and envelope to send your way. Good Dives, Charlie

You are right, it is a better looking regulator than the Aquarius. I'd really like to compare it to the Aquarius as well as an early Mk2 and (whenever I get it rebuilt) a Mk5. Jacob

I sent a few seats out to those who requested them. For the cost of a stamp, I've found good homes to things I'll never use. Please enjoy them.
At one of the last AUP clinics (Oceanic/Hollis acquired by another company), I learned a helpful trick to install those seats. Put them in the freezer for about a half hour before fitting into the piston. They'll slip in easily.
Good Dives, Charlie

Thanks again Charlie, I'm looking forward to keeping this thing running for a very, very long time.
I didn't know that freezer trick — does this work on other types of pistons as well using the same type of seat fitting?

The Aquarius was a popular regulator. We successfully used them in our class and rentals in the 70's, and maintenance was quick and easy (and not often needed). I think the external IP adjustment was appealing to many, however, the original Deepstar's IP could easily be adjusted by shimming the single main spring. The Deepstar II was a big ugly failure in comparison.

The deepstar was the USD version of the Spiro 8, with a plastic piston, if the spiro8 was appreciate in Europe, it was not in US market, things you written confirm his rapid replacement by the aquarius on the US market in 1971 , the CLUB arrived in 1980 !!!! I am try to see if the piston and other pieces are the same... Fred

I like the external IP adjustment with the screw, it is so easy to adjust the IP

Thanks for those extra images Fred! I didn't know about the Spiro equivalent. I've been very happy with my Aquarius, it's become my current go-to single hoser for diving with my modern equipment. I've had it deep, in heavy current, and in 49 degree water without any hiccups from the regulator itself.
The only thing I don't love is the hose routing — to have my second stages on my right and my pressure gauge and inflator hose on my left, the regulator has to be positioned a bit strangely. I'm wondering if something like a Scubastar or Scubapro Mk 2 would serve that need better. Or, a third option, maybe find a splitter for my Scubair and work with that.
