I just received from a ScubaBoard member a copy of the Navy Experimental Diving Unit Report No3 1-80, "Evaluation of Commercially Available Open Circuit Scuba Regulators," by James R. Middleton, March 1980. This is a 270 page report on a lot of our regulators, and actually has the Dacor Moder G3NB regulator tests. This is the balanced version of the R-4 regulator, which apparently was built and made available to the U.S. Navy. It did not pass. Here's the results: NEDU Conclusions 1980-1 by John Ratliff, on Flickr NEDU Conclusions-2 by John Ratliff, on Flickr What was surprising to me is that the Scubamaster Model 7687 and the U.S. Divers Company Calypso VI and Conshelf XIV made the top list. The Scubapro AIR I/Mark V, both the 4-Port and the 5-Port versions, also made the list. John

Hi John. Thanks for providing this information to us. I’m happy, but not surprised that the Calypso VI is in group A. It’s the same as the Calypso’s III and IV, but with the brass crown that holds the seat in place. These generation Calypso’s are my favorite single hose regulators and I have been using them for decades. They are super easy to service. The only potential downside is that the HP seats are no longer available. That said, the HP seat in my Calypso IV is the original one when it was new in the 70’s. This regulator has over 1500 dives since new and still works flawlessly with simple o-ring replacement, cleaning and tuning. In addition to its reliability, as the Navy evaluation revealed, this regulator is also an easy breather. I have other brands of regulators, but I always grab my Calypso first.

I am going to place the entire document into my Google Drive area, and then any of you who want to see it can download it. So if you want it, PM me your e-mail and I'll give you access to it.
I just gave ArtC access to this document, and he'll let us know if he could download it. This is an important document since we lost the Rubicon Research Foundation Repository. Thomas, also known on ScubaBoard as "Axxel57" who is somewhere in Central Europe, sent this to me as a download.

Glad to see the Aquarius on there! I've been using mine as my sole regulator over the last few months and been loving it. I had it in Lake Michigan last Saturday and it worked a treat. I wasn't familiar with that Scubamaster so I googled it. While I didn't see the reg, I did find the report in PDF form online — it's good reading! Jacob

I actually have one of these regulators, and it has a MR-12 first stage, with a unique second stage. One of the features of the second stage was a weight that, in a head-down position, rested on the exhalation non-return valve. This provided the regulator with the ability to tune the regulator to less than 1/2 inch of water pressure for inhalation, and not get a free-flow when in a head-down position. I think JB has or had one of the Scubamaster regulators too. John

I'm not in the least bit surprised the Scubamaster was in there. ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/4872/32247509428_1f9668d6a8_b.jpg) ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/3717/33172728042_6129649c4f_h.jpg) After Healthways folded, their last regulator was the Scuba Star-II, it was reformed into Scubamaster. They tweaked the second stage, adding a venturi-tube and better lever and connected it to an MR-12 first stage. With the failure of Scubamaster, IDI bought the second stage, there was a reason for that, because it was an outstanding performer ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) JB

Hello John , JB or Scubamster 7687 Owner's
Can you please post pictures or drawings from the Scubamaster 7687 second stage exhalation balancing (weight) ? I could not find anything about this very interresting design .
Greetings Rainer

Rainer, as far as I know, the Scubamaster didn't use the weight, but was an IDI thing, but here ya go ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/7634/27829371660_90685f8066_b.jpg)

Here are a few more images so you can see the progression: ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/5760/29822800563_c10a76ab4a_c.jpg) In the above drawing you can see how it has a removable valve-body. ![](https://live.staticflickr.com/581/33039066322_233d7926d7_h.jpg) In the next one, you can't tell by the drawing, but, the valve body is soldered in, and it's the conical ScubaPro type. So then if you go back and look at the SM drawing, you can see that they took the Scuba Star and added a venturi ![8-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/nerd.png) JB
