I like the mystique and speculation on what Mark will be getting.
On a separate note, in some of my catalogs from early 70s, the R-4 was $90 and a C-3 $75. I didn’t think much of it until I realized that’s about $100 difference. Understandable to be a bit more due to extra parts, but pretty substantial for what, from what I gather, is an inferior reg.

The R-4 and the C-3 are both great regulators. It's true that the C-3 was a better deal, only b/c of the price.

The R-3 has a "Dial-A-Breath" label on the top, with indicatios of "hard" or "easy." The R-2 does not.
Some of the R-4 and C-3 have that vane for the "Dial-A-Breath" feature, but I don't know whether they have the label or not. Later R-4s and C-3s do not have that feature.

If price wasn’t a factor, what would you choose? I'm not hating on the R-4, I've even got a patch for it It just seems like you guys prefer the C-3 (including myself because I've got another on the way ) You can see the new exhaust diaphragm peeking through here. I'm anxious to try it out Dacor R-4 patch by Jim Perdway, on Flickr

Mark, if you look at the label, it will say what it is, like with my C-3: I hope this helps? If you haven't been informed, please, do not remove the valve-body #25, from the main-body #16, unless you really absolutely have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Getting them to seal up again can be a real female-dog JB

Maybe not, with a James exhaust diaphragm?

Marks reg came in. It's an R-3 in pretty good shape except for the diaphragms. That would have made it a wall hanger a year ago.

I just mailed a sample later model (R-4, C-2,3, C-3N) HP diaphragm to Doug in Florida. He is already making a 2500 series (R-1,2,3) HP diaphragm, and will soon offer one for the later models.
