Anyone in the Los Angeles area should go pick this sucker up, local pick up only... Most people have no idea how big "The Golden State" is, this is an eight-hour drive from me JB

Most people have no idea how big "The Golden State" is, this is an eight-hour drive from me JB At the bottom of the ad he says he will drop them off at a UPS store, you pay UPS directly. Not sure how that would work though. Don't they insist valves be removed?

I think if you can prove that there is no pressure, it may be okay to ship. The UDS-1 cannot have The valves removed without completely dismantling the unit.

PS, did you see the other, NIB UDS-1 at the bottom of the last page?

Sounds like they have relaxed a bit, Have an old J valve tank that I was going to find a new home for. At that time UPS did not care if it was empty. Remove the valve or it does not ship. Not having a chain vice I never messed with it. PS, did you see the other, NIB UDS-1 at the bottom of the last page? Yes...NICE.

Gosh, if this was a piece of Healthways gear that was this rare, I'd be convincing my wife right now that she had to find someone to buy her product in LA, or that we jus' hafta go see William S. Hart's house in Santa Clarita... JB

US Divers ABS System...- Rob Studnica of the Scuba Museum had for sale a triple tank manifold from yet another futuristic US Divers product called the ABS system. I thought it's worth mentioning here. - Its my understanding that the manifold for the ABS system has standard 3/4" tank threads and can be fitted with brand new tanks.

I looked this up and there is very little information on the web regarding this system. I did see an old thread that Dr. Sam Miller started in '04 (?) that was to describe the difference between the UDS and ABS, but the UDS-1 seemed to dominate the discussion. In fact, I believe John recently resurrected that thread. Can anyone speak to the ABS as far as buoyancy and so forth? Will the buoyancy characteristics be the same as the UDS? I see that Rob's system comes with a BC. So instead of a dedicated regulator it has a dedicated BC? Or can others be used? Inquiring minds want to know...

I have not used the ABS at all, but from the design I surmise that the buoyancy characteristics will be nice. The valve is at the top, and so it will hug the diver's back easily, unlike the UDS-1. The BC can probably be changed out, but it would need to have the same type of attachment to the shell/tank bands that the ABS does, so that might be a problem. Can someone provide a link to the ABS currently at The Scuba Museum? I cannot find it when I went looking.

- Rob was only selling the ABS triple tank MANIFOLD... I saw it for sale on EBay for only $150 so it's probably already sold. But you can contact Rob at the Scuba Museum via email. Rob Studnicka- The photos I posted of the ABS came from a discussion on the Scuba Board forum. There might be more information and references there.

Here's a hypothetical question:
Could the manifold threads on the USD-1 be cut to fit another kind of tank, and if so, are the tanks similar in size to something else to fit in the shell?
I know John doesn't have anyone in his area to do the eddy test...
I figure all but a handful of these units are shelf-queens, what could it hurt?

Unfortunately, Jaybird, no, I don't think that would work. When the UDS-1 was designed, it was designed with huge valve openings. To try to cut down the thread size to the standard 3/4 inch would compromise the valves because of lack of material between the opening and the threads, and because the valve is aluminum, not brass. Here's a photo of one of the valves: I have thought of that, and rejected it as a possibility for getting my UDS-1 back into service. John

Just got the news my 2nd UDS-1 system tanks passed hydro and their visual. I've been accumulating some parts for it. Now I need to get this 2nd set in working order. I didn't want to stick any money into fiberglass repairs until the tanks passed. Now I need to get the housings to my local body shop to repair some things on those fiberglass housings.

Sheriffdiver, Just so you'll know, this isn't fiberglass, but cycolac (sp?) plastic. I used epoxy on mine, and put in aluminum rod reinforcements on the handle. John
